How the fck is asbestos not banned in the USA? (srs)

Nasty nasty stuff, lost my Grandfather to mesothelioma.

Can't believe it's still used in the U.S, we've got some on part of our kitchen roof, makes me nervous.

True story. When I was in high school, I worked at the local Cotten mill during the summer. They had a group of us high school kids in their scrap yard knocking off the asbestos off of old pipes to recycle the old pipes. No masks, just a claw hammer and prayer.

I thought it was banned. That article makes it seem like its used all over the place. There are so many restrictions and remember 50 different states each with their own bans, I dont think there are many situations where they are openly using aesbestos for new products. They couldnt use the product nationwide so they segregate themselves. You have to remember they are also open to massive lawsuit liabilities because there have been class action lawsuits all over the place from people getting cancer. I think there definately are cases of them importing cheap chinese materials with unlabeled asbestos in it. THey have had houses with cheap chinese drywall that basically had to be rebuilt, dont think it was aesbestos but there was something wrong with it to where they were knocking down every wall in brand new houses.

Every time i hear things about aestbestos controls (PPE requirements to handle aesbestsos) its for projects/jobs removing old aestbestos contaminated products from decades ago.

Protip: If you want to own your own lucrative tradie business.. get into asbestos removal (hazardous substance removal).

Work 6 months with a team as a laborer to get the hang of it, take a 2 week course that certifies you, buy a work truck and the necessary tools and PPE (air filter/circulator, etc) and you are off. A job that would take 2-3 people a week to complete can pay anywhere from 3k-10k. Jobs that take a few weeks to complete pay massive $$$.

BTW asbestos IS banned. Cannot be built with. But the problem is, it was widely used in buildings up until the 80s/90s. So people that are renovating or demolishing these buildings can be exposed to it.

That's really bad man.. stuff is deadly and takes like 20 years to kill you from initial exposure.

Something some U.K brahs might not know - Asbestos was only banned here in 2000 meaning any house before then is likely to have asbestos in it somewhere. I didn't know until we brought this place (built in like the 1890's) but apparently it's not just the big sheet of it you see, it's in like everything; plaster, artex, cement and loads more i am sure.

Yeah its very expensive because companies dont want to deal with it or have the certs. Its hazmat and has specific rules and the tradies have to have training, certs and PPE with the proper specs.

Article in the OP makes it seem like you can just go to homedepot and buy asbestos products. Its just not 100% banned across the board, but its nearly unused. I wonder who is using it on the up and up anymore.

But extremely dangerous in dust form, could get lung cancer from it.

Edit: just know that it's everywhere in almost every building made before 1990. And it's still massively used in poorer countries like China, Russia, Brazil,... As far as I've read, it was never used as much as today in the world and science is VERY clear about the dangers.

It is not 100% banned, but it's only allowable uses now are in non-friable (read: can't be turned into dust which can then be inhaled) materials such as floor tiles, glues and the like. Even then very few modern building products contain even trace amounts of it. The problem is with renovating/demoing older buildings that may contain asbestos in more hazardous forms. That's why asbestos abatement is a hyuuuuge industry in the US, and the work itself + material disposal is all highly regulated and only allowed to be done by people with all the required training/certifications (think 80+ hours in a classroom before day 1 on the job).

This is what I understood. I actually bought a rental house that had asbestos siding on it (built 1950's), but the inspector told me that asbestos that is all in one piece is not a danger - it's the 'friable' asbestos - asbestos such as that in insulation and can be released into the air - that is dangerous.

As long as it's not made into dust, it fairly safe actually. People talk like the stuff is highly radioactive or something. It's also very good at what it does and may never be fully replicated by science.

But the site states it is not banned in the US. Do all the states have different regulations regarding asbestos or is it regulated federally?

Federally regulated, every worker must be EPA certified to perform any kind of asbestos abatement, and air monitoring is performed at all times during ANY asbestos work.

As far as it still being used, as I said earlier it is only allowed in a select few materials that are basically impossible to create an exposure scenario, and even those are used less and less frequently due to the stigma associated with it.

This. I worked at a law firm who did asbestos claims when I was younger. Unless you are breathing the dust in everyday for a long period of time, asbestos won’t hurt you. It’s been linked to mesothelioma and those are the people who got exposed a lot.

If it’s in a building you are in it’s harmless as long as it’s not cut and removed.

There's also lead in virtually all brass still.

Unless you're somehow drying the 0.0000000001% asbestos in your water and snorting it up your nose, you should be fine.

Yeah, we were stupid High School kids, but we were aware of what asbestos was, but at that age we thought we were invincible. Luckily none of us ever were sick from it. It’s been 35 years since.
