Literally insane

And I think the CIA sock puppet Elon Musk was the first one to bring it up/make it popular?

Damn what a surprise

if you actually listen to and grasped Elon's explanation... it makes total sense.

Or you know... you can believe in some divine bearded man in the sky.

It’s actually based on strong logic and while not accepted, it’s also not discounted by some of the smartest and best minds on the planet. Would explain a lot about quantum mechanics and the true nature of reality, since the closer you look, and the smaller the scale, there doesn’t actually appear to be anything there but information and probability.....just like a game.

It’s just a thought experiment. Don’t take things on the Internet so seriously.

It’s the modern day version of religion. Think about it. It has all the same paradoxes of God, just with a technological twist for people who don’t milk cows all day anymore

The other is we live in a hologram. Also plausible.

Musk along with most of those tech ceos out in Cali are microdosing with drugs that cause you to believe the world is not what it seems. It’s unironically how they come up with their ideas and deal with the stress of managing billion dollar hedge funds

If they legitimately believed in sim theory they would be using all that capital to prove it and get their names in the history book imo

The same exact thing could be said about every religious explanation of the creation and existence of our universe and our place in it.

Literally, the same exact thing.

It’s the same idea. It’s just been given a modern update.

For some reason, it’s very difficult for a percentage of the population to believe things happened the way science explains. There has to be some outside greater influence, or it just doesn’t make sense to them. So this is just another way of believing in something greater than biology and science. In this iteration of religion, technology is the new God. Or more specifically, the person who created/runs the technology that generated our simulation is the new God. He just doesn’t have a beard anymore and live in the clouds. He lives in another dimension.

Seems that it's viewed as an attack on God, even though a simulation would have to have a designer... strong logic from the atheists. Is simulation theory the scientistic goblins' creation mythology?

I haven’t seen it as an attack on the Christian God personally. But of course it is just another creation myth.

it is 100% without a doubt a simulated universe.

We are currently making simulated game worlds ( MMORPG's ) and eventually those simulated worlds we're creating will be so realistic that the AI living in them ( which we create ) will be self aware yet won't know they are in our game worlds

Some small differences; they acknowledge it isn’t supported by any significant evidence, discuss it only as a thought experiment, and don’t kill people over it....

They don’t exploit the very last dollar of poor people for any type of fantasy promise, they don’t use it to control other peoples behavior...

Okay, some big differences.

This is basically the premise of the theory. Technology is evolving rapidly... eventually we are going to have the computing capability to run simulations of our own. And it's asinine to think we would be the first to get there.

Sounds like they're beta as fuk. If they won't even impose their values on the world, how far can they really be said to believe in them? Unless their values are just a negation.

It makes a lot of sense. Simulation theory is the creation myth, AI is God and Elon Musk is the prophet.

yea, i really do think this is part of it. i think people have seen computers and try to extrapolate it to the world

agreed, op. there are also too many universe theories. more proof, less mental masturbation

you'll also find there aren't experts on everything. for instance, a physicist prob won't know as much about the body as a biologist. so it's plausible that a theory about the universe may not take into account everything

you could go into consciousness theories here (and psychologists and neuroscientists) and then postulate about whether consciousness is needed for the universe

His argument is that it's a 1 in billions chance that we're in base reality because of the rapid development of video games. Seems to be only theoretical.

Couldn't you use that argument for anything? There's a 1 in billions chance that you're not living in a solipsistic world due to particle/wave duality since observation collapses the wave function of electrons.

Or you could say there's a 1 in billions chance that we don't live in a multiverse because of this quantum indeterminism, and all possible outcomes do actually occur somewhere, with only one of them reflecting what happens in our observable Universe.

Literally the same data but two opposite interpretations. I just feel like saying "it's a 1 in billions chance that we're in base reality" isn't actually based on anything but ideas.

that's an odd definition of beta. Even more ironic coming from the Brit, who exists in a centuries outdated Monarchy and are... and will remain our autistic little brother.

Yes, we're beta because we're not out murdering people that do not think the way we do. The only thing that has killed more people than religion is communism.

Ironic statement seeing as communism is inherently atheistic. The only thing which has killed more people than religion is irreligiousness! Wait wut?

I tip my fedora to you sir.

Also, removes the “man is special” bull. Because let’s be honest, if humans had the capability to cheaply simulate worlds, marketing research would be one of the biggest uses. BRB, running the same life 9M times with small life experience changes to see how it impacts brand preference.
