Thinking about applying for flight school (srs) Need some pointers

Hey brahs. Worked on my current career for years. It's definitely not it. I want to pursue something that I know I've always wanted to do as a kid which was fly planes. There's a couple flight academies in my area and before I apply I was wondering if you brahs can give me any insight on anything I should know. I know its fkn expensive but I know it'll be fulfilling in the long-run. As I side note I want to go commercial.

Awesome, I actually had this same epiphany the other day as well. I wanted to fly planes as a kid, and never ended up doing it. Kinda regret it, as the pilot lifestyle really appeals to me a lot.

You’ll be living out of a suitcase while getting your flight hours, and then afterwards as well. Tons of responsibility on your shoulders, obviously. Have to start at a small airline typically for low pay, and then work your way up to regional and then the bigget carriers. I’m sure it beats being officecel though. Maybe try it as a hobby and then go for it if you like it enough to try and make a career out of it. There are other gigs at an airline that you should look into that may be just as rewarding.

Get most of the money available before you start, running out of money and taking breaks will slow you down and make it cost more in the long run.

Get a 1st class medical right off the bat. You only need a 3rd class for a student pilot license but the airlines require a 1st class. You wanna make sure you can qualify for one before wasting 10’s of thousands of dollars and years of your life.

Get your written tests out of the way as early as possible. Use Sheppard Air to study for every written after the private, they don’t have a program for the private test. Also, take the Flight Instructor-Instrument written test on the same day you take the Instrument Rating written. It’s basically the same test so no need to study for it twice.

I just got my flight instructor certificate like 2 weeks ago, but there’s pilots on here with way more experience than me for sure.

It’s not quite that expensive, it cost me like 75k to get all the way to CFI and that’s at a pretty expensive school + multi-engine ratings which add a lot

Also another thing I would add - don’t jump into any of those fast-track programs right off the bat. Get your private license at a mom & pop flight school first and then go from there. 1. It’s cheaper, 2. It gives you a chance to make sure this is actually what you want to do, 3. You might actually have some FUN. The fast track chit is brutal srs. Plus it’s overpriced as fuark and because of COVID destroying the aviation industry they all just raised their prices and got rid of their benefits (my school used to offer a guaranteed instructor position when you finish the program - not anymore).

go military, get paid to learn to fly, and soak up hours. If you fly p-8s you're pretty much flying a 737 while getting paid.
Flight academy sounds like a scam, flying isn't difficult and you can google the answers to the tests, the rules and comms might be weird, but besides landing and takeoff it seems boring. You pretty much autopilot for 6 hours, maybe taking a 15 degree turn after a navaid

What is alluring about flying? Seems fuking boring as chit brah. Takeoff and landing is basically all you do and that’s pretty damn easy it seems like.


Also everyone is competing for the same few good jobs at one of the major airlines, the rest are getting paid chit and being a flight instructor for $14 an hr. It’s like a Ponzi scheme. The top few commercial pilots make a ****ton while the rest get paid chit for many many years until they finally, if ever, get their chance at making decent money. Even then you’re away from home often and I don’t see flying being that good of a career moving forward. AI can fly a plane 100x easier than it can drive a car and we already have self driving cars.

What’s alluring about 99.9% of the jobs people do? Even in the most boring moment you’re still getting paid to fly a plane, you still get to look out the window and see amazing chit. It’s not for everybody but if you know, you know.

I also like the fact that you go to work, you complete your “mission,” then you go home (or to the hotel). There’s no such thing as taking your work home, there’s no due dates or deadlines or chit to procrastinate on. And it’s something where you can always work on learning more/sharpening your skills, and you can always see yourself improving. It’s just COOL!

6000 hours, multiple type ratings here, I run a corporate flight department.

Take a few lessons before committing a lot of money. Then dedicate yourself and get your ratings ASAP. Go to the cheapest place, your license is the same as someone who paid double at some fancy part 142 flight school.

I thought I wanted airlines. Happened into a part 91 corporate job and fell in love with this type of flying. Now I'm looking very smart for staying corporate. If you're in the PHX area msg me and I could get you up in a jet sometime. Always looking to help up and coming pilots, I had a lot of help when I was just learning.

Have been thinking of doing the exact thing for awhile too. I’m in healthcare and make good money, but I’m getting burnt out and always had a fascination with flying and always wanted to be a pilot.

For the guys in here that have done it, do you just take out massive student loans? Do most of these flight programs offer financial aid? I really want to make the transition and start doing this, but I think money is the biggest issue.

And afterwards once you have all your ratings and certifications, I feel like it would be impossible to find a job due to recent events..

Good thread though OP, I’m in the same boat as you and would love to start flying and go commercial.

I think you can get into your private pilots license under 10k pretty easy. My dad has a plane and has been hammering me to get my license but I just dont have the time right now. Guy I work with just got his in about 6 months from discovery ride to private pilot. Another 3 months or so he got his instrument rating. I flew a single engine experimental (vans RV6) from Florida to Michigan a few years back and it was pretty awesome.

If you go military you owe uncle sam 10 years. Though if you sign for 4, it's only another 6 so may not be bad in the grand scheme
