Why are houses in some neighborhoods built so close together?

I have a lot of neighborhoods near me where houses are built close, on top of all trees being cut down and small backyards.

Isn't the point of a house is to have privacy and space? Why cut down all the trees? Makes no sense to spend so much money and you're borderline living in a townhouse or apartment complex.

The answer, like everything else, is money. Well, that and zoning. Developers want generally want as many lots as possible to maximize profit. More houses = more money. To a lesser extent, sometimes zoning will dictate density, but its almost always market driven.

Those homes are really catering to millennials who are lazy AF and don't care to maintain their yards.

What's a bigger fraud is that those skimped down homes are just as expensive as regular single family homes. lol. People are dumb who go for that chit.

More houses per square inch. In some countries like in the netherlands where space is scarce, most houses are literally against each other. So your bedroom wall is your neighbors bedroom wall. Imagine the noise when you have trash playing loud music all day.

Seats on a couch isn't bothersome because 9/10 times you're sitting with family.

It’s just like a townhouse that has had tons of success because:

You only own the ground your home is built on not any of the yards or land so property tax is low. In lots of suburbia property tax is getting insanely high so people can’t afford places with land

People maintain the roof and yards so maintenance work and expense is minimal

Or at least it seems minimal, because you usually get bled on a HoA

But the bleed is slow and manageable and saved by the individual because they only pay tax on that tiny plot. And there are no big expenses that go along with having to do a single family home fix yourself or by hiring others (even roofing costs a fortune these days if you don’t do it yourself which is tough)

People are able to do without any land or yard and devote all their available budget to their indoors. So if your option is to live in a 400k single family with a yard you’re looking at a home that basically a dump. Falling apart and old. If you get a 400k rowhouse or no land house you may not have a yard but inside you can make it ritzy. And you don’t have to worry oh **** I need to pay 20k right now for a new roof because what is savings

This is from the consumer standpoint I don’t know the developer side. I’ve avoided working with him by I know a guy who builds houses. I know he has to pay out the ass for every permit and things. Even to do work on your own home here you need to pay for very expensive permits at the town

In my area those no lot line subdivisions are basically retirement communities. No young people at all live in them since where I live most married couples still have children. The first time I ever even heard someone talking about possibly buying one was my mother in law.
