Agreed they wen't too edgy with the movie and into disturbingly peado territory, probably just to cause controversy, noise and so on. The concept itself is interesting (growing up as a muslim woman in hypersexualized west) but they wen't too edgy with it putting controversy on top of storytelling.

I haven't seen the movie, nor do I plan to. I can't say if the director meant to portray a certain message, which I'm sure she did. But there's ways to do this while not hypersexualizing it, I mean every coming of age character has some sort of arc like this in movies or tv shows. But common fukkin sense is that you don't have all these scenes and closeups on children, and this insane fukking plot points that I'm reading. Like any fukking rational person would have seen some of these scenes and been like what the fuk bro. Also what the fuk is up with the parent's essentially allowing their daughter to be filmed up close, touching other girls, etc. Like that the actual fuk are we coming to as a society? Like my immediate thought is that some closet ped0 is just going to watch this movie and get off on it, and that is fukking disgusting to me.

That's the issue, at best it's purposefully outrageous content to shoot to the top of trending (mind you that's still hurtful to children involved and watching). At worst it's normalization.

If you want to criticize sexualization of children, you can simply make a wholesome film with children with virtuous themes. And show a few short scenes of kids engaging in bad behavior before being quickly corrected/punished for it. Alot of films have done this. Basically, balance out the mountain of trash kids consume with something positive.

As if a child watching this film will take away anything besides "oh I wanna twerk too!"

That movie 'Love' which is just a porno loosely tied together by piss poor dialogue is the same. I saw better production quality in Pirates 15 years ago.
