No, they can't. Both students and teachers are literally expected to just ignore when violence is occurring around them, even if they're the target. Defending yourself will get you suspended or otherwise reprimanded, if the teacher had done anything they also would have gotten written up/fired/etc.

Someone willing to send their kids to public school in 2020 is someone who does not give a PHUCK about those kids lol. Really impossible to raise kids in a responsible manner now unless you can afford to have one parent always at home schooling them, or a private tutor or something.

If I was a teacher, I'd stand between the two of them and if things escalated, I'd hold my arms extended to each side. I've done the same after a HS basketball game when one of the opposing teams parents was arguing with our coach. I just stood between them, not placing my hands on either, and said, "Let's all go home now". Thankfully, nothing happened.

If we keep this up, we won't have any teachers or police. What a great society.
