"If we all ate the same and trained the same, I promise you..." (Misc lifters)

Spoiler!
"If we all ate the same and trained the same, I promise you we'd all still look different..."

I saw someone post this on social media yesterday, and it's actually an interesting way to think about things if all you're doing is tempering your own expectations, e.g. a 500 pound morbidly obese man's goal probably shouldn't be becoming Mr. Olympia. There would still be winners and losers, lean people and not lean people. Weak people and strong people.

But it's still a loser's attitude, unless you simply don't care about physique and/or performance. And then more power to you if you're a scientist whose sole concern is a breakthrough in your field or whatever and you don't have the mental energy to devote to anything else.

But there are tons of people with less-then-favorable genetics who have made great improvements to their physiques and/or strength/power levels.

Personally I was handed perfectly average genetics, but I still have goals to increase my performance beyond what the average person is capable of doing.

I used to be fat, out of shape, borderline blood pressure at 19. I made the conscious choice to start exercising, then began bodybuilding. At my heaviest I was 215. At my lightest, 171. Best decision I ever made.

If everyone stopped with the processed food and the glucose additives and began lifting weights, gut health would improve tremendously, as would athletic performance. We'd see a drastic decrease in heart disease, diabetes, and generally obesity relate illnesses.

That will never happen, though. People are too fat, lazy, and prosperous for their own good. Let's be glad we saw the light and decided to work hard and compromise to improve our own lives.

I mean, its not technically wrong due to muscle structure etc.... but everyone would look good if they trained and ate properly. Gotta look better than yesterday...

its true, most people are small and weak. I think the training and diet contribute more than genetics though. Granted, everyone cant win MR.O or a WSM title. But if we all trained and dieted the exact same way with the exact same intensity we would all look pretty similar, just bigger and smaller versions of the same.

Yup, losers attitude.

It's like:Even if I would have trained like you, I would be nowhere like you, I'm just not built for it- To have ease of mind with throwing the towel in the ring before even making an attempt.

To anyone non lifter thinking like this: bruh who cares - just improve your own body & strength, it'll make you happier guaranteed. There's worse hobbies out there!

Huh? The statement is correct, we would all look different. For example a 5 foot woman would get fat as **** if they ate the same as a 6ft5 man who was maintaining a healthy weight, but in terms of attitude, yeah you should always be adapting and pushing yourself forward towards improving no matter what your genetic limits. The only annoying thing is when someone obviously finds it easy because they’re genetically gifted and then says to other people it’s easy, you just do this and this. It’s not that easy for most people
Remember the guy that gave up? Neither does anybody else.

Agree with this and IMO it's about improving yourself. Even if you don't have great genetics, it's still better to work out and take care of your body than to sit around like a potato and stuff your face.

It’s true and I personally like it a lot after thinking about it in this context:
You see all these IG models and bodybuilders, actors etc. selling their diet programs and workout routines online and suckers buy them all the time.
Even if you ate, worked out as much as someone like Arnold, Kai Greene, Michael B, Lebron or whoever you won’t look like them at the end of the day just because of genetics.

I think that many things can be learned from these types of people but their programs should never be blindly followed like many average people do in attempts to look like them.

Wish there was something like a bodybulding camp where you go there for three months, you have to follow a prescribed diet (food provided), training regimen (with personal trainer), and have to follow these rules for three months and when you come out, you'll be a brand new person.

I wonder.

So, on the GP yards the inmates have mandatory exercise regiments they follow (gang rules, exercise or get stabbed or beaten), and they all do pretty much the same thing. The diet is almost identical, some might eat more or less, but very close.

Some are jacked, some are just fit/lean, and most are a bit skinny-fat looking but with good endurance; again, they all exercise pretty much the same.

I think genetics can and does play a large part, if all other factors are the same.
Short cuts to success are often paved with lies.
1/13/16: Massive hernia.
5/10/16: Finally back to lifting, light but improving.

So true I'm in college and sometimes I think I'm not as smart as my friends LoL :-/. I then came to the conclusion that all thoughts like that is bs and the important thing is to get my degree.
Same goes for lifting and anything valueable.

Yeah of course. There are other factors in prison like drugs and even OJ. Wes Watson even talked about how he used to trade the junk food on his tray for more meat. So there's always going to be people trying harder than others, but overall, yeah, fair point.

But none of that means don't try.

If you start with squatting the bar, a 185 squat is a pretty nice accomplishment. And you're going to feel a lot stronger even if that's as far as you ever get.

My girlfriend and I are the same height and almost the same weight. We train TOGETHER a lot of the time; we eat basically the same food (at the very least, dinner is identical). Her arms are still far more muscular than mine (bigger wrists, thicker forearms, jacked shoulders... she mogs me hard, guys).

On the other hand, I'm a lot faster than she is over short distances, whereas she has much better endurance for distance runs and hikes. She took a genetic test that shows she lacks either copy of the "fast-twitch gene." I pretty obviously have some fast-twitch muscle because my vertical jump is decent and so is my 100 time (not amazing, but 13.3).

So yes, genetics matter, but so do a lot of other things. Training history, for instance. What sports we did as young children.

Genetics are everything. anyone who doesn’t agree is coping hard

I’ve seen guys who work out just as hard as me but can’t bench even 135 to save their life. they’re sub 5’4 and tiny wrists. at the same time I know a guy who benches 500lbs+ natural and only goes to the gym 2x a week. all genetics
