Anyone else want to start karate after watching cobra kai?

Anyone?

Think it would be quite sick if you find a legit school

I used to think this and still think it's true in many cases

I think if you trained somewhere legit though in a style that emphasizes full contact sparring it would be very effective for conditioning and making you a better fighter

Been thinking about krav maga or muay thai.

Muay thai school here is like twice the cost of the krav maga though, even though it's probably better.

I have heard mixed things about krav maga and had a pretty bad experience of it when I took some classes. The place was full of LARPers practicing wierd unrealistic stuff. I have no doubt that if you trained at a great place it would be awesome but there's a huge quality control issue imo

If your goal is to learn to fight and budget is an issue, you can't go wrong with boxing/kickboxing and judo/wrestling

Most people have zero martial arts training. Knowing how to kick will help. But kicking is difficult to master.
Most karate styles are point based and don't hit the face. Therefore, it's not a good self defense to learn.
Unless you find a real old school karate place.

I think kickboxing, muy thai is more effective. But unless you plan to really give it your all, you're better off learning boxing.
Why? Because it's a lot easier to learn only how to punch and block punches, than to learn how to kick, punch, knee, elbow etc and also defend against all of that.
Plus most street fights won't ever see a kick, since most people don't know how. And in a fight, you only use what you know.
So it's better te become decent at boxing than to be bad at muy thai/mma and only learn a little of everything.

I know a dude who used to compete in karate at the national level and he got beat up in a street fight by a dude who never trained anything a day in his life. Not worth it IMO.

Heck, even I want to train karate after watching it, but I'm gonna stick with BJJ and learn a little striking on the side (as I already was, from my gf who trains at a LEGIT krav maga school).

It did make me want to do some gymnastics/tumbling. Most of the cool moves are really that.

Phuck no, most Karate out there is garbage McDojos. Besides I tried getting back into some martial arts a bit ago (BJJ primarily) and after a couple classes realized the desire wasn't there enough anymore to continue showing up. It certainly wouldn't be there for Karate.

Also, I did Tae Kwon Do as a little kid - and even back then I thought it was lame.

That's what I mean man, most are mcdojos. I wanna find an old school place though that does something like Kyokushin.

I boxed for over a decade and am a bit tired of bjj after several years. I already know how to fight but wanna try something a bit different nomsayin

Yea that's why I'd rather to muay thai or something. Krav Maga seems like it's mainly theoretical stuff with self defense/defending from weapons etc. I heard they don't actually practice striking that much.

The muay thai place is like $200/month. Not sure what the average price is.

Are there any old school boxing gyms near you?

Usually cheap, and just as good as mt imo

True, they were all insane at BJJ as well (maybe not Chuck). Andy Hug was another amazing karate/kickboxer. The one benefit from trad martial arts is leg flexibility + spinning/fancy kicks imo. But, it's just not worth all the other BS you have to do like Kata's and joint lock nonsense etc.

The thing about martial arts id say it matters 70% who you are, 20% who your instructor is and 10% who your classmates are. Honestly I would rank krav maga among the worst possible styles for self improvement, it basically takes the worst time-filler aspects of TMA like karate and tae kwon do and puts a tacti-cool spin on them. Its shocking to me that in the days of open submission grappling exposing the worthlessness of such 'self defense' drills somehow krav maga has snuck by as a 'popular' style. Now im sure that there are some schools that have invented some form of sparring and even technique drilling but these guys are probably just flying by the seat of their pants, whereas styles like boxing, american kickboxing, karate muay thai have a lineage of techniques that go back a long time. None of that **** is going to matter if you dont spend the time practicing the real basis of combat sports which are footwork, technique and muscle memory, developed through drills, padwork, and practical open sparring application. That doesnt need to full contact every time either but it shouldnt be ****ing stupid. So the most important thing you can do is find a good school near you. Karate has developed a horrible reputation because it spread in popularity and spawned thousands of schools that are geared toward children only and mostly suck. Some of them might not suck but it could be hard to tell. American kickboxing likewise is almost all little different than jazzercise now. Muay thai has more of a better reputation now - why - because it didnt blow up in popularity so the remaining places tended to be pretty close to the roots, higher quality and hardcore. If you look at both historic and recent matchups when the dedicated style (now most schools are all borrowing heavily from each other, even tiger shulmans is supposed to be decent these days) faced each other, karate actually came out ahead over muay thai in the majority of the matchups that even took place in thailand. So the most important thing you can do for yourself if you want to do any martial art is go drive around within your acceptable commute from your area and watch a class or take a free class and make sure to research who and what is available near you. Because these days if you jump into some BJJ or muay thai school thinking, these are the legit styles that blew up at the start of MMA, chances are youre just a sucker at the new wave mcdojo.
