starting to feel like deadlifts aren't worth it

the margin for error is so small, you fuk up once out of 100 times and you can't lift heavy for 2 weeks and are rehabbing to for months to start over on it.

If you dont feel comfortable doing them then don't. At the same time you can say that about every other compound movement. I think the issue with deadlifts is that some people automatically think they need to pull within 85%+ of their max every time they pull. Thats a recipe for disaster.

yeah that was my problem... i had a great streak for a while where i was adding weight every week and then took some time off to recover like 2-3 weeks. tried to jump back in today around 90 ish percent and of course snap city and pulled my lower back.

I'm just retarded. to me reps of 305 doesn't seem like 80 percent of reps of 350 because it's 50 lbs off.. but it's close to 90 percent...

lesson learned

RDLs for the win. Don't be a potato and you won't get hurt

For what deadlifts and rack pulls take away recovery wise, they don't give back much more than an RDL imo in terms of hypertrophy

We all learned that lesson. I messed up my back so bad they had to call the ambulance to get me. I was in so much pain I was afraid to move so I can get food and water. I got sick/dehydrated and passed out from the pain. The sciatic nerve on my left side gave me legit hell for weeks.
I was supposed to pull yesterday but was not feeling it so I didnt. Probably would have hurt myself if I tried to push through.

Lay off deadlifting for weeks at a time. I learned that as long as you squat and do DL assistance work your pull will get better.
People told me I needed to stop but now I can pull 400+lbs more than when I first hurt myself.

You can still do them, just don't go so heavy.

damn that makes me feel a ton better. I don't think it's nerve or spine, just a pulled muscle, so I should be aight.

I've been hesitant to add squat back in after a similar injury to what you described a couple years ago. I've been building up my front squat in the mean time, but I think i can add back in regular squat as long as I take my time progressing back up to 3 plates +

Only if you lift like **** with poor form and an ego. Lifting weights has no higher risk associated with it than most other sports when you look at average number of injuries per hour. I heard Jordan Feigenbaum talking about this, but can't find the video right this minute. Now obviously if you have previous injury or something then you might want to consider something else, but meh. Then again nobody technically needs to lift so if it's not for you and you don't think you can do it without injury then bail I guess.

After I ****ed my back up I worked my way back into heavier weights through high reps and alternating sumo with conventional. I also breathe and rebrace at the top of each rep. Never worn a belt, but I've heard that helps.

every time I got injured by deadlifting it was because of stupid chit that was my fault.

Got 5 hours of sleep, have no energy, but said phuck it anyways? -> injury that stopped me from lifting for 2 weeks

The thing with deadlift is every time I get injured its always at the very beginning of the rep, right as it leaves the floor. You have a very, very small time period to decide if the you want to attempt to finish the rep. My policy now is any time there is even a shadow of doubt just stop the rep, drop the weight down, or maybe even stop the exercise completely until you feel better/more energy. But yeah, im not stopping deadlifts. Love the life way too much to stop..

I don’t deadlift anymore. RDL is superior for non-powerlifting purposes, imo

I’m surprised more people haven’t switched to a hex bar. I get that it doesn’t hit the back side quite as good but it feels so much safer and ergonomic. I used to tweak my back twice a year or so doing traditional deadlifts but have never had a problem after switching to hex bar.

Literally zero bodybuilding reasons to deadlift heavy, rack DL is better

Full deadlifts at a challenging weight is good for strength and biomechanics tho

Been deadlifting since 2011 and suffered 3 injuries, every single one of them was because of me being stupid.

Deadlifts are worth it, deadlifting anything over 315 is just for ego though. I do sets of 18 reps with like 150 lbs and never had any back pain, i actually also feel like the muscle is getting worked not my ego.

Same thing with biceps, ever since I started doing curls slowly with low weight they have gotten bigger
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

-I'd rather live life saying "I failed" than "I could have"

deadlifts are only worthwhile for getting strong. for building muscle they’re massively overrated
