Caught this video on YouTube this morning and I know there are at least a handful of y'all that are dreaming of making your own place in the country away from some of the busyness and people that seem to have lost the plot.

I don't know that I would go the same way on everything if it were me (I would like some thicker walls), but this couple has done a fine job of making a home and life that they want using the resources they have.



They remind me of my grandparents that built their own lake house starting when I was a baby. Craigslist wasn't a thing so if you wanted found material you just had to get out and hustle for it. The brick was found used and hauled to their house in the suburbs where grandma would go out and knock the old mortar off the bricks by hand.



It began as the section on the right with the front door and a patio that you can't seen in the picture. Over time the garage was added, then an apartment on top of the garage, and eventually the patio was covered and closed in with windows to make a room for a big pool table.

This seems more and more appealing by the day. People like this seem to have life figured out much better than us city dwellers.

Yeah, it really does.

It was always so quiet at the lake house. You could really hear the wind and the birds. You knew if someone was coming because you could hear a car coming up the gravel road.

We had water and electric, but the only incoming media was from a regular old rabbit eared TV with no remote that had mixed reception of 4 or 5 stations. I remember a lot of cards and dominoes, some jigsaw puzzles, games of badminton out on the driveway. We didn't have a phone, though there was a family up the road that had a party line. If you wanted to reach someone who was out at the lake you had to call them and see if Ms. Baker could drive over and find someone.

Bud and Lucille (friends of my grandparents) had a cabin across the road and they didn't come down as often, but if they were there for a big holiday weekend then you could depend on Bud making barbecue chicken. At the end of the street were Perry & Isabelle who were kind of heavy drinkers and Isabelle had a bit of a hippy vibe- I remember she had bead curtains hanging inside some doorways in her house and she mostly wore caftans and sandals.

I've dreamed about this kind of place since I was in my late 20s. Now I don't know...not sure if I can manage all the physical work to get set up, or if I would be okay with being along drive from any medical services...maybe if I had good neighbors.

It really is. I'm thankful that there are pictures. It is funny what sticks around in your memories and what fades out. I wonder if there is something about aging that causes people to start recalling more from when they were children, or if maybe just being retired and less busy gives your brain more free capacity.Real. I think it was something that definitely happened more than once so the photographer had plenty of chances.
