Dear diary coming,

What’s your field? Because that could definitely change the approach. In the legal world for example you usually get by with either great credentials, or more likely by knowing someone.

FWIW I’ve seen Indeed behind the scenes it’ll filter out the people who just don’t match at all. After that HR or recruiting is going to look at a given resume for like a minute before deciding to pass it up the ladder, or tossing it in the trash like the tuna salad nobody here likes.

That’s why it’s so helpful to have an in, you get to bypass all of the BS and as long as you’re not totally unqualified or they don’t have someone else lined up you’ll get the interview so you can actually sell yourself. As much as I hate the term networking because it’s been corrupted just like everybody is an EnTrEpReNeUr now, you might just need to get creative in getting to know some people where you want to work.

Covid makes that hard, but maybe try to think about the places where people in your industry congregate if things are fairly open where you are. For me it was a popular restaurants bar, and where I got my hair cut. I used to go to a gym that was stocked professionals just looking to hire chill, intelligent bros. Now? If you have any licenses you could try continuing education classes, rotary if its popular where you are because old brahs love some young energy.

Clearly resume blasting isn’t working so maybe take the next few days to figure out how to get through phone screenings just pick up the phone and make some calls on Friday when people are already ignoring whatever work they might have before the weekend then you can plan some juicy Friday drinks, coffee, or maybe even get lucky and they’ll dip for a long lunch. I did know an engineer who had good success using a web crawler to pull job postings tailored to their skills and experience with great success. They moved from the northeast to the southwest with a better position, better salary, and lower COL.

TLDR;
Step 1. Make friends
Step 2. ???
Step 3. Profit

Maybe consider some sort of trade cert that can get you working fast. If you study hard and are good at driving you may be able to fast track a CDL if you have a class A you can certainly get work hang in there, theres lots of people worse off than you, my suggestion is to stop thinking about it too much

I don't know what the industry is like where you live, but maybe try find some security work to tide you over.

Some of my friends lost work due to covid-19 and picked up work fast after getting licensed. Although, in Australia it's easy to land a 65-70k p.a. full-time seccy job as long as you speak clear English, have a car and don't look like a bag of chit.

I feel you OP. Only qualify for maybe 10-25% of entry level jobs that are available in my field. Sent out around 60 applications now to those. Only 1 recruiter contacted me back at this point. Turned me down later with no feedback.

True.

It is just very tough right now.

Temp jobs could be worth some actual consideration. I don't know it for a fact, but I would expect that many companies will utilize temps if they have an increase in business during this pandemic because it is painless for them to cut people that way if there is some sudden change vs. making permanent hires.

And OP you want to chat with this guy:

Don’t know that feel because healthcare is always in demand. What field are you in? What’s your education? It’s not your fault due to the times we are in, but it’s also maybe your fault if your resume isn’t extremely optimized and well written.

I would get a second opinion on your resume. You should also start catering it(and your cover letter), to positions you really want. You can also reach out to these companies after applying for an update.

Reminds me of my hunt pre COVID for an engineering internship. A 3.5+ GPA isn't enough, nobody cares. For lots of these companies, that's the bare minimum. They want you building helicopters in your garage in your free time and picking up trash at the park on the weekends.

going to have to send more than that OP (srs)

for the job I have now I've probably sent like 500 job applications, got interviews for maybe 5 of them. It's a numbers game, it only takes 1 to accept you.

hang in there. searching for a job should be your full time job, if you go into it with that mindset and work ethic you'll be fine mane.

also the g4p thing.

Keep applying. It's a numbers game. It's really hard right now. I got an offer after a while. The firm that gave me an offer said they had more resumes in one day than they did in 2 months when they had an opening in January. It's really hard these days.

You need to lean on your network of friends and family. Randomly applying for jobs is a waste of time and so harmful to your confidence.
So many jobs online are already filled or someone with a network connection/reference just has to go through the motions. You have no chance.

Not true. You have to keep applying and be likable in interviews. Act like you really want the job during the interview.

I don't know anything about unemployment rates in your area, but if you've sent out 150 applications and only gotten 3 interviews the problem is something application / resume related, unless of course your area has an insane amount of unemployed people so the applicant pool is ridiculously big.

Are you applying to jobs that you don't qualify for? Are you tailoring your resume to the job? Are you listing accomplishments at jobs as well as regular job duties (ie... big projects you did)? 3 interviews with no offers isn't odd depending on your field and skill level, but 150 apps and only 3 interviews is very odd unless you're doing something wrong.

Not odd if you dont have much experience in that field. Most companies dont want to train people during Covid.

Well if you going to be homeless, might as well move to Cali to be homeless. The weather is freaking sweet there.

Houston is not bad either. Cheap food there. Just sleeps in the malls. Or get a gym membership - showers and work out 24/7, bb.

I’d actually recommend having a few of them tuned specifically to the industry you are applying for if you are applying for jobs in different industries.
Pro tip: Add an additional "blank" page to your resume and c/p the entire job posting in white font.

The problem is that there's a huge mismatch between the skills workers have and the skills employers want, because outsourcing and automation is changing things so quickly and employers have gotten greedy and won't train new workers.

It's a chicken or the egg dilemma. Workers don't want to learn new skills as it's not guaranteed, or even likely, to result in employment, and employers don't want to train new workers.

Something has to give at some point.

Get into tech sales srs. MrAWatts doing like a quarter mill a year with no degree. Fratagucci was selling some financial instruments making similar money.

Here is what Brad taught me about resumes in PM, I don't think he will mind me sharing:

"So for example on your resume for an item like

“Built relationships with vendors to negotiate ideal terms for purchases.” - if you can you should add something measurable - how much money in dollars did you save the firm

So anywhere you can on your resume ... try and think of results and try and outline that best you can

Here is my section for prior role on my resume ... I could have just said some wordy chit like developed relationships with clients and updated them on global markets to foster trust and increase asset flows

But instead I used real numbers ... it’s all about results"

Thank you everyone for your inputs. Had gone cycling to clear my head. I've read each and every post and taken into accout all your suggestions. Like most of you suggested, networking will get you further than just randomly applying. This the one of the strategy i'm using. 2nd is aquiring new skills; tradie route, doing an intensive course for welding and construction or whatever is being offered.

I'm just hoping there's no a 2nd lockdown.
