The Social Dilemma Discussion thread

Has this caught anyones attention yet? Originally, I brushed it off as netflix trash - I mean they pump out so much content and sometimes it's just so transparent and shallow. But then my buddy asked me about it, and low and behold it's pretty heavy. Between Kaczynski, that Cuties BS, and now this.. my image of the world is being dangerously distorted. A bunch of early figureheads at these tech companies talk about their involvement and intent in creating the algorithms of FB and Google and whatnot - and to summarize it, I think the idea is that AI effectively already exists, and without some strong intervention, it's going to erode the social fabric of society until it collapses. Post-modernism, for JP fans, is supposed to do away with value systems, and the most controversial people these days are the ones who insist that their reality is valid, regardless of popular opinion - or sometimes justifiable fact. So the issue becomes we can't agree on what reality is, fake news spreads 6x faster than factual news, and everyone who is connected can be reached instantaneously by... anything!

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg too, there are so many additional conversations worth having. But it would appear we are fcked.

People hate on him but he is right. Everything was great until 2012. Thats when there was some weird cultural shift.

I've been putting it off as well. Been meaning to watch it. My only hesitation is that I've seen so much biased trash documentaries that netflix has put out before that got everybody talking. Like "What the Health". Awful misinformation that spread like wildfire

I don't blame you guys. Netflix can have great production value, they can really spice up some hot trash, so I don't bat an eye at stuff that is usually right up my alley - just like this film, cause I just don't have time. But unfortunately this tied some big ideas together.. it really makes you wonder.

For sure. This was my initial criticism "oooooh the internet is scary, NSA, webcam spying, Russia and China..."

And frankly, it does exploit obvious things we all already know (how/when data is collected, where it's stored, how it is used) but it also tries to frame some of these major organizations as 'de-facto' governments, who we all simply take their word for it when they say they can monitor themselves; when the reality is that no one is actually paying attention to the incidental effects of making things more accessible or better integrated into our lives. I think the point is that for companies, the bottom line is selling us advertisements for the highest bidder, and keeping us engaged in order to get those clicks/impressions.
