Trying out bjj... anything I should know? (jiu-jitsu)

Checking out a bjj place tomorrow night. They'll let you try it out for a week before having to decide if you want to join up.

What should I know before going? Tips? Did karate and taekwondo when I was younger, and I'm well aware they're quite different.

You should go in and go 110% all the time, so they know you're for real. Even if they tell you that you don't need to go that hard. GO HARD. Really show them you're there for the long haul.

When someone grabs your arm, make sure to pick him up and slam him on the floor.

Its the first defense they teach you at BJJ, so you won't look completely clueless.

Good luck OP!

You're gonna get wrecked, just how it is until someone new comes in. You may not know technique but still try to defend yourself, it's a long road, consistency is key, the more often you go the better you'll get

Demand respect. Before you introduce yourself, figure out who is the highest ranking blackbelt in the room and hit them with a surprise rear naked choke as soon as you step into the place.

No females who grapple actually look like that.

In San Francisco, where based on your post history I strongly believe you're from, the men you grapple with will all have STDs and expect sexual favors from you after you're dominated on the mat.

Don't try to muscle your way to submissions, be a good rolling partner and learn to flow. Like others have said tap often, if the instructor shows a move let your partner try it out on you, don't fight it like your life depends on it.

Don't get mad or discouraged.

Check da ego at the door.

Bring Water

Ask about their training background(any medals, tourneys they been in, other arts they've trained in? Because if it's wrestling, they'll likely train you in some of that as well)

Take notes. Bring a pen and pad and when class is over dump that knowledge on the paper so in the chance you say "nah im good " at least you'll know a few things.
"You can trai as had as you want to, but witout the right fel supporting your training and recovery, you will never see the resuts that you should."-ron Man

Oh by the wy...Size f*ckng matters, in everything. Don't believe the hype. Size f*ckin maters. Size DOESN'T matter to peope who dont have any size, that's why they'r like "oh size doesn't mater". SIZE, GIRTH, THICKNESS, EVERYTHING. Its a game of inches in life..add up all those inche, Victory muthaf*cker!-Gre Pitt

I been doing bjj for since January.

It's a lot of fun. It's hard, and even white belts that have been there just a few months will probably own you. And that's okay. Tap when you're in a new position and you're not sure what to do and some choke or joint lock is on. It's okay to lose. When new people come in and try to use all their strength right away, they both 1) gas out real quick, but 2) more importantly, they end up getting their partner or themselves hurt.

Don't be the guy the trying to use their arms to break closed guard kind of thing.

Other than that, it's a hobby that gets you some exercise and something deep to dig yourself deep into. I wouldn't really try to learn bjj for self defense unless you have to. Crazy people out there with buddies or weapons and your bjj won't help at all.

When you're rolling try whispering gently I to your partner's ear.... "It's ok baby do what you have to do" and follow it up with a nice sniff of his hair. Instant victory works every time.
