Why is Tool held in such high regard?

Lateralus is 10/10, aenima like a solid 8 or 9/10, the rest of their discography verges from pretty good to outright pretentious drivel from the remnant outtakes of lateralus/aenima .

Maynard is also a massive cocksucker, not that has any bearing on the music but just throwing it out there

Bands which execute multiple solid af albums over a number of years are what I would consider putting in the GOAT tier, tool is not one of these bands

i think it has something to do with them being great musicians from an era where musicianship wasn't really valued

plus all the dusty old stoners and led heads love the drug content

nowadays it seems less about the actual music as it does the "oh my god bro the whole album is a polyrhythm diminished to a fibonacci sequence that reverberates at the same frequency as your pineal gland broooo"

They are good but not a top 10 band or the best band like a lot of people say. Plenty of better progressive style bands out there. Laterlus and 10000 Days are like 9/10 albums though.

Agree with almost everything you said but even then, their best stuff is just *that good* when compared to everything else out there. Lateralus on a good hifi still blows me away to this day all these years later, nothing else does that.

He really is - His pretentiousness had lost all it's novelty and really started to look ugly starting with the last Perfect Circle album (Eat the Elephant) and the last Tool album. Maynard is and always has been talented, but I think he's reached an age where his flair and talent aren't making up for other areas of his lackluster character.

The last Tool record was boring as chit, period. IMO the first 3 albums are all really good, 10000 Days is decent.

Aenima is excellent and Lateralus is masterpiece. Danny Carey is a top 10 drummer, IMO.
