Oh, I would say that most of the divisiveness has been ginned up by the media and then gets stoked by social media. Media picks up the most extreme and awful loudmouths from either side and puts a spotlight on them. Somewhere along the way compromise or a considered individual opinion on policy (not the party line) became equivalent to betrayal or conspiring with the enemy.

The biggest con IMO has been convincing a lot of people that the reason they have a lower quality of life than they would like is because poor people are sucking up all the money when actually you can see very clearly (inequality) that it is the rich people that have been sucking up all the money. And we gave up sound money for straight fiat (went off the gold standard) which opened the door for all kinds of shenanigans.Might not get much agreement here, but I think if Trump nominates a moderate right judge instead of a far right judge that it would improve his election results. There are plenty of people in the middle or moderate left that don't like the Democratic candidates. But maybe they would have felt that they were obligated to vote for Biden to prevent the other team from picking up another Justice. If Trump nominates an amenable untarnished candidate who can sail through then they have one less reason to vote for Biden.We do need balance. Also real dialogue based on a shared understanding of the facts.
