the judges all lean either liberal or conservative. a president/senate can nominate a new one once there's a vacancy. the judges serve for life. so its a lottery in a sense to see which party is in power during a time when a judge steps down/dies/retires whatever. 9 judges total so each seat is a big deal.

The supreme court is the GOAT. Basically you have judges who have life time appointments. Trump has appointed two young judges, 50 is young in "supreme court" years. So if he appoints another conservative judge whos lets say early 50s max, you will have a majority conservative judges for the next 30+ years most likely. That is the biggest loss to the liberals (the ones who know a thing or two about a thing or two).
