Security Camera question 43k

Need your help misc.

Looking to get a few security cameras installed outside?

What's the best option for this? Don't really want to hardwire them, unless it's one that connects to an existing doorbell.

I'm a noob on this. I know you can buy packs of 2, 4 whatever....mount them and then watch the feed through an app, right? Not sure you if you pay a subscription for that, or how it works?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks bros.

We use the Blink XT, cheap and easy to set up. Great battery life. One thing is that we cannot get live view right when we open the app. You have to click on the static camera image then it comes up.

Arlo is another way to go. More expensive but works fairly well from what I have seen.

If its wireless it can get hacked easily.. But I think if thieves see wireless they do a 180 because they can't cut a wire

You can host a website on your computer and show the feeds on it... Go to 180.90.60.40:80 on any web browser, type a password, and yea... But that's probably only if you buy quality CCTV cameras not those chitty $600 dildo looking camera bundles someone ordered from China in their basement

If you have a friend that's a programmer ask him if you can setup a website from a computer in your home, all you need is some kind of software that can interact with the cameras you bought.. And you don't have to pay a subscription

...and you can store the footage with unlimited hard drive space, you could store footage for a month without spending a lot of $$

I use night owl.

Infrared, wireless, sound, 4,6 or even 8 channel I think, stream to my phone when not at home with motion alerts in fields you create etc.

Almost every option you will find that is "turn key" will be something cloud based or something with a home station that you need to connect to the internet and is a security liability.

If you are remotely tech savy you should look into BlueIris.

Key words to research
ONVIF Cameras
VLAN and or Dual NIC

Basically you either want to run a managed switch with separate VLANS, or run a PC with two networking cards (NICS). All your cameras are on the "private" network that has no access to internet, they talk to your PC/server running blue iris, and that machine has a seperate NIC connected to the the internet. That way you can get alerts, remote viewing, etc, without depending on Amazon/thecloud etc and without putting your cameras on the internet publicly.

I have had good luck with SV3C cameras. Oh and one other thing, in most states, its important you turn OFF the audio recording function, or you run afoul of wiretapping laws.

Girl uses a Ring at her house, my house uses Nest since it uses Google smart home devices. Both work very well.

I have a door bell camera in front and a motion sensor floodlight/camera by the back door. Both are hard wired, but there is no exposed wire. In the back, I took the existing light down and used the power/receptacle. took like 10 minutes to install myself. they both use WiFi and are controlled through an app and will notify you when there is motion. you can talk through them and sound an alarm. setting up the app was idiot proof. the only down sides are if the power is out, there is no wifi for it to work. also, nobody is monitoring it 24/7, but it will save your recordings if you pay for the monthly service, which I think is like $3/month.

I'm sure there are bunch of paranoid folks who don't want their camera interwebz based, but I don't give a sh!t. Its fine for what I need.

EDIT: Ring has wireless/battery options too.

Camera itself is great. Awesome quality and battery life. Used to have good service.

Recently though, their cloud service has become absolutely atrocious. There are times when I cannot connect to view the feed. All video has to go through their servers(no local/LAN monitoring option). There's always a 5-20 second delay in connecting.

Someone at your door? It's going to take a minimum of 10 seconds to find out who it is at the least and is typically 15-25 seconds.

You HAVE to use their cloud service, and their cloud service SUCKS. Do not recommend/10.

I've got Arlo's all around the outside of my house. Needs new batteries every 6 months. I keep ZModo camera's in all my non-occupied rental properties. They plug into a wall outlet. I aim these ones at the front door and the HDTV. Both have night vision. Have caught 1 intruder so far. They spent about a year in jail.

don't use their cloud service, for me it works, its free (no monthly fees), for the door i have a ring doorbell

I have Arlo and have never had a problem with them. The video quality is great and the rechargeable batteries last a long time. I got a pack at Costco and had them set up very quickly since it's just one screw and the little magnetic mount- and zero wires.

There are so many freaking models, do you remember which you got? Seems the new one, the arlo pro 3, does not come with any storage..

I'm interested in this too. But I think I'd want them wired that way I never have to worry about changing batteries or recharging them. Are we talking like 5 grand to set up a good security system? Or is it cheaper? Would also want to get an alarm system installed in the house. Not gonna set it up myself.

if you don't want crapo chit that is on some companies "cloud" (their own server), just google local security integrators in your area, like ADT or whoever comes up on Google.

It will be more expensive (a lot more when you factor in their labor and what not) and each camera will be hardwired, but if they are decent they will wire the cameras in a way that can't be vandalized easily on your house like some chit cameras on Amazon can be, and you'll just store the video locally.

Real rich people go this route instead of cheap nest cameras or whatever on the "cloud" (a company's server that can be reached on the internet by anyone)
