Did You Guys Actually Learn Anything in College?

I'm taking a few classes I've always wanted to learn, and it has gone from me trying to genuinely learn, to now me just doing what it takes to pass the class with a high grade.

Is this the norm?

I was reading the textbooks taking notes, participating in the online discussions, but the Professor assigns so much crap & quizzes for the hell of it that I'm just using rote memory to pass. I have an A currently, but I'm a little disappointed.


Do you guys have any advice on how to actually learn the crap and not just play the game? I'm working on a biological science degree btw (which I don't need). I just don't want this to bite me in the ass later on.

I learned a lot, but barely anything I learned was directly applicable in my jobs after college.

More "generic" skills like analysis, time & stress management, etc. - those were the skills I really honed in college.

College and universites are a business first and foremost. If you want to learn for the sake of learning then read books or go to the library. If you want to exchange money to earn credentials then go to uni or college. I have my engineering degree but have learned way more from working than i did in uni.

Ok, this is an underrated look at this. Time management is definitely the main skill that is getting me a high grade more than anything else.

I did accounting so I learned a good bit and use it every day. I work in Tax, not the worst white collar job out there.

Other degrees I have no idea.

If you didn't have those skills by the time you made it to college you were behind the 8 ball, pun intended. I could roll j's when I was 16 but everyone around me always wanted to smoke bs. I blame rap music for that and the fact that that's how I knew which were the good pills/cough syrup in the medicine cabinet. Yeah it taught me who you know leads to success and that people who look successful didn’t necessarily get there on hard work

For example I’m quite certain those in popular Greek life houses hoard exams from hard classes that they just use as study guides while all the other plebs just have to learn organically. That’s how they have time to do all the community service while still passing classes srs. Likely the same deal with college athletes who somehow have 4.0 GPAs in hard majors, since college sports are essentially frats as well

Makes it easy when half the professors are tenured and recycle exam questions every year

I was a terrible student in High School. I never cracked a book or learned how to study. I cruised by with what I retained from listening in class, and got some stronk scores on the SAT and found myself at a top 20 college competing against the top 5-10% from high schools around the country.

So I knew listening wouldn't cut it. I read everything assigned, and tried to make my way through the problem sets, but the reading was literally hours and hours for each course every single time we had class. I took my first exam and got a C. I was like fuk me. So I went and talked to the professor. I told him there was no way there were enough hours in the day for me to read everything and do everything assigned. He asked if I did the problem sets. I said some of them. He told me I was doing it wrong. Quit reading the books. Do the assignments, and use the books to solve the assignments if necessary.

Next exam I got an A, and I didn't crack half my books in College from that point forward.

I retain almost everything I hear, as long as it makes sense I lock it in. Same with the problem sets, I learned a ton by figuring out how to do the problems.

Didn't mean to sound like I was knocking it; plenty of people who coast through college have a harsh reality check and find themselves unable to even get interviews for jobs after college.

Let alone do well in those careers.

At the end of the day: college is pretty much whatyoumake it out to be. Brahs who go to class, take poor notes, go home and play WoW all night alone and never interact with other students are missing the whole point of going to college imho. Plus, some colleges are a great place to get your sex game down for life.

Ya but not from my major. From my minor. I minored in history and it was interesting so I enjoyed it. My major was Sport Management and save for finance and some sponsorship stuff, was pretty self explanatory.

majored in engineering. don't use 90% of the "knowledge" but it definitely rewired the brain and taught how to think at another level.

Theres a lot of classes required, some electives will be dumb and you wont learn or retain anything. Some might be interesting but useless in the real world.

but this sounds like you both dont need this and it also doesnt interest you... so pretty hard to get motivated. Why even do it, why not do something else that is interesting.

Aside from that, yes, I learned quite a bit, although I took a four year Outdoor Adventure Leadership BAPHE that was a ton of fun, so that helped.
