Hory chit.. just learnt that Diesel engines don’t have spark plugs!

Mind shattered. The piston simply compresses the oxygen until it heats up enough to ignite it. I consider this thread worthy.

Very rare anymore. Glow plugs were just to "preheat" the cylinder for starting purposes.

Yes, HD pick ups use either glow plugs or a grid heater type system. I would assume even smaller diesel engines for a passenger car would have some type of system also.

I run a couple of Peterbilts so yeah I get what you’re saying. It’s not common for the misc to ever say anything about big rigs so I just assume you meant cars.

Not bad brad. If you are ever in this situation again, always go for blocking the intake. Fuel starving will eventually work on a gasoline engine, but as you noticed, it can take awhile. In a diesel, the compression is high enough that it can run on engine oil. So if you have an old engine with bad rings, or more likely, you blow a turbo, it will keep running on oil even if you cut off the fuel completely. Only sure fire way to kill a runaway engine is to remove it's ability to breathe.

I have an old diesel Mercedes that has glow plugs. OM603 Turbo Diesel, laggy but fun as hell when it's in boost
