Anyone ever been pepper sprayed by someone or did you use it yourself maybe?

What is it like? Share your stories.

Thinking of getting my girl one as there's too many shady people in my town. Is it effective against knives?

My friend's neighbor was a cop, one day when we were shooting hoops in his driveway with his kid he came out with the pepper spray. He wasn't trying to be a dick or anything. He sprayed it in the open air just to demonstrate and even being 20-30 feet away and taking in the fumes indirectly was kind of intense. That's my only exposure, though.

Typically LE have a stronger pepper spray/mace than you can get as a civilian. If she's not opposed to it, get her bear spray instead of the little key chain thing if you can. She best careful, like the guy above, just being down wind from it isn't pleasant.

I have been imagining it in my head about spraying yourself instead lmao. That would be a fail for sure.

I’ve been sprayed twice and been secondary contaminated many times. Also been through a CS gas chamber

Direct hit from oc is brutal - eyes stay shut and hard to open, my mucus membrane always swells and makes it hard to breath, slight disoriented feeling and coughing. But don’t forget most oc is a tight stream and needs a good hit of the eyes nose and mouth to be truly effective. When you are spraying moving targets it’s hard to get a solid shot and also suffer splashback and it rubbing on you.

Yeah, in the Navy. Its pretty painful, but imo not as bad as people make it out to be.

There's more powerful sprays out there than the OC used in the Navy though.

Not pepper sprayed but I maced myself in the eyes when I was 4 lol, srs.

My dad was a cop and left his belt on the table. I don’t remember pressing the button on the can of mace. All I remember was how bad it burned and when my parents ran into the kitchen and saw me crying with the can of mace on the floor they realized what happened. My mom carried me to the bathtub and just kept flushing my eyes out with water.

Probably the earliest memory I have of my entire life, lol.

Been sprayed a few times for training purposes.

It doesn’t just burn your eyes temporarily. It gets in your pores and burns your skin, it gets in your lungs and burn them. It is an overwhelming feeling of pure irritation.

When I got sprayed, it was training in order to be able to legally carry it and use it against people. It served a few purposes. One being so we knew what we were putting other people through, but also so we knew what to expect in case we got inadvertently sprayed ourselves. This could happen if you spray into the wind for example.

After we got sprayed, we had to do a type of obstacle course comprised of “redmen” (guys with red protective pads) while we had a baton and practiced specific takedowns and hand to hand techniques.


After we finished that training, we got to hang out at the decon station that was a bunch of water spouts and baby shampoo to clean our eyes out. After some time passed we began academic instruction again.

During classes that afternoon, my eyes kept going through this cycle. They would dry out a little bit, leaving the chemicals to irritate my eyes. I would have to close my eyes tight as hell and try hard not to rub them while they teared up again. Once there was enough tears, the pain would stop for a bit until they dried out again.

Then you go home and try to take a shower. The hot water opens your pores and the chemicals are “activated” again. The second and third times of being “activated” are no where near as bad as the first.

I would take being tased or tear/CS gas (which I am intimately familiar with) any day of the week two or three times over instead of getting sprayed again.

That chit is stupid.

My girl just put a mini pepper spray on her keychain since NYC is such a cesspool.

God forbid she has to use it but if so, there is a 0% chance she deploys it properly and 100% chance she ends up spraying herself in the face.

She should practice with it if she carries it. It is more appropriate to figure out how you react to it in a controlled environment. The fight doesn’t stop all because pepper spray is used. It keeps going and if she gets impacted by it, she might not be able to defend herself anymore.

The chemicals do not discriminate. Once they are in the environment, everyone is fair game.

I agree with your assessment there is 100% chance she will feel it.

She gonna use it on the subway in a small closed in area?

When I was in prison, there were riots happening in my hallway in every barracks, all the windows were broken, the cos had left their posts so we were down there fukking chit up by ourselves, several brks doors were popped and propped open before they shut em off at central control. We were throwing locks and batteries at the cops. Anyway they got these semi auto guns that shoot these rubber balls, lined up at the riot gate and pelted everybody in the hallway until they scampered into a barracks, erts came and slammed the doors shut, then they peppered sprayed/maced the whole hallway at each riot gate as like a deterrent.
Makes your eyes water quite a bit, makes you cough quite a bit, a direct hit of that chit would be pretty bad, but if you were determined to turn the fuk up it could still be done, it's bearable.
Idk what kind they had, but I'm sure there's much stronger chit. Used to get hit with some bullchit like it in the hole too

I keep telling her that. It's tough to test it out in the city since everywhere is small & confined but I'll make sure she practices next next time we're out in the suburbs...especially after reading this thread.

She hasn't taken the subway since Covid. It's more the area around her apartment that is the problem. Used to be a nice, quiet area and now it's teeming with homeless and drug addicts who get off the 1-train and congregate in a park.

In college a friend had some mace. I want to say it was the mid-upper tier stuff that LEO's use. Anyways we had a suite, and big open common room with windows at the end. We had the windows open, and sprayed a very small amount in the far end of the room. From over in the kitchen which was like 30+ ft away, you could tell it was nasty stuff. Eye's watering etc. Surprised the hell out of me that when I ran in, my armpits and groin were immediately irritated. Like REALLY irritated. Plus the eyes/respiratory system. Pretty nasty stuff

The spray can be a good tool, but when you are talking about self defense, there are a lot of different things you can/should use.

Do you guys talk about/practice any other method of self defense on a regular basis?

An important aspect to employ is proper posture. Present a “hard target”. People want easy victims. They don’t want to have to work for it. Walking with your head up, being assertive, etc. maintaining situational awareness as well. So things like not keeping her face buried in her phone, so on.

There is a lot we can do to protect ourselves.

Tell her to get a pocket knife, 9 out of 10 mufukkas respond very appropriately to getting poked the fuk up, she stabs some bish relentlessly and they'll run off, overhand grip on the knife like when you wanna stab something on a table not how Mike carries it, and run that hoe in em bout a dozen times, employ chase mode, don't just stab once they can't feel that chit til like the fifth time.

Old vid and I think the customer might’ve been in the right because the shop owner never fixed his laptop but still wanted the money. I might be wrong though.

I had to spray a grizzly that charged me when i was like 25, was down wind so i got a nice hit as well... I almost died cajun style

I’ve been sprayed 5 times total. 4 times in training, and once by my sgt while working. Was fighting with a guy and my sgt thought it would be a good idea to spray him while I was taking him down, so I got a bunch of it too.

First time sucked really bad. By the 4th and 5th time, it was just kinda whatever. It still sucked, but I knew what to expect and how I would react, so I got through the drills much easier
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a nonlinear, nonsubjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

It happens more than you think and always sucks when thy happens. Worse is when it happens in the locker room and someone accidentally sprays it switching rigs. That crap stays in the air for hours
