American man faces two years in prison for unflattering review of Thailand resort

So, what was the negative review? He wrote the following:

“The staff was not friendly. Nobody could smile. The restaurant manager was very rude and full of himself. He is from the Czech republic. There are other hotels with better-friendlier staff. Avoid this place as if it was the Coronavirus!”

The hotel claims the following in its response to this guest’s situation:

The guest had left two negative reviews, the first of which was removed by TripAdvisor for violating review guidelines
The only purpose of the review was to defame the food & beverage manager
The guest had dinner in the restaurant the night he arrived at the resort, and brought his own bottle of liquor
When he was informed of the corkage fee of 500 THB by an employee, he dismissed her and used abusive language towards her
The food & beverage manager then intervened, and he decided to waive the corkage fee to avoid a disturbance
The hotel is “surprised” that even after this generous gesture, the guest still wrote negative reviews online
“We hope that other resorts don’t have to go through the same experience as the one we had” (hah!)

interesting story

my take is that they have laws like this because tourism is such a massive part of their economy, by potentially defaming and damaging a resort, you are potentially directly impacting their entire income/tax/government

another case of some whiney yelp reviewer crying combined with first worlders not being aware that other countries, particularly third world chitholes, have different laws

Thailand is a chill place to visit but it is a developing nation and you need to take some sensible precautions when you go e.g. crack open a guide book and check what does and doesn't fly there.

Unfortunately it's exactly the kind of place that dumbass Westerners visit in order to drink, screw hookers and generally treat the place and people like it's their personal toilet.

I feel bad for innocents that get caught up in the danger and corruption over there but not at all for tourists that get hammered, start a fight and ending getting beaten into a coma by enraged locals.

Don't get me wrong, I've brought my own merch to a restaurant as well but when the staff sees it and asks you to put it away several times, you put it away. Get caught then accept it.

The stupid part is they didn't say he couldn't bring his own wine, they just wanted to apply a corkage charge just like every restaurant does if they let you bring your own booze.

100% agree this guy is his own worst enemy. I don't think he needs 2 years in a hellhole prison but I do kind of like the idea of him spending a night or two in a Thai jail to let the idea of consequences for being an arrogant jackass sink in.

There is no "freedom of speech" in Thailand. It isn't America. Talk in a remotely negative light about the royal family and see yourself getting 15 years in prison.

There are all kinds of horror stories I've read and heard about from Thailand. I've spent some time there myself and seen some shady things first hand.

Next time some libtard tells you that the reason poor countries are poor is because rich countries steal from them or they are disadvantaged, ect, show them this case.

Countries like them, tourism is their only real export, so it's everything to them but they are not intelligent enough to figure out going this route is going to cause 1000X more damage than a simple negative review, Absolute most pathetic case of butthurt I've ever seen. Some countries simply will never get out of their situation, they are incapable whether it's deep-seated corruption or political ability.

I always laugh when retards pay out on dirty older men going over there, they don't release 3/4 of their economy is basically from tourism/sex tourism. Over there, no welfare. You can't have someone work for YOUR living while you go roam the streets at night, no over there you don't work you can starve.

You're always at a huge risk from law enforcement there, even a simple bar fight and they can just throw you in jail and make sh*t up as they go along. You should see how long you get detained for in Japan before someone even glances at your case properly.
