Calling themselves an “engineer.”

You guys are programmers, not “engineers.”

Been called a “programmer” for all these years and now they want to be called a “software engineer.”

The president of the college of engineering where I got my degree from was a CS professor. He talked me into switching to CS when I was in undergrad.

The reason they're called Engineers is because they use scientific principles, mathematics, algorithms and data structures to solve complex problems. I know it's a loose term and some of that can be due to how to categorize experience in the field and to determine industry paybands, etc.

I do argue there is too much emphasis on it compared to aerospace, ocean, civil, mechanical, etc engineering but "software engineers" are needed to implement R&D for those branches so it comes in full circle.

BTW I have colleagues that have Engineering (i.e. Civil, Aerospace) Degrees and do what I do now.

its not like salary rates by profession are easily attainable information. median is essentially the same. but engineering has higher job satisfaction on avg.

Be aware that there are plenty of positions being called engineering that aren't even close.

Discount Tire calls it's tire installers "Tire Engineers" just LOL they don't even qualify as tradies.

You can have the term engineer if you want. Originally it was a term to describe the guy who threw coal into the steam engine in a locomotive train. He ran the engine, thus called an engineer. Dunno why people want to paint that title on themselves.
