I bought a gun boyos!! Recommend me a good scope please

Had a little extra cash laying around (tends to happen when you just blindly allocate your $$ to buying SPX futures contracts..) and was browsing some rifles at a shop with my dad. Happened to come across a sweet Marlin Dark 336! It was only $800.00 too!!

It's chambered in 30-30, with a 16 and quarter inch barrel. I bought this for deer hunting, and planking. But it's really only good to about 100 yards (obviously since I'm a good shot I'l be effective at about 150) - but was wondering what you guys think are some good scopes or red dot sights.

I think a scope may be too much. If anything just something that's 2x powered, but wanted to see what the gun experts of the misc think.

How much are you looking to spend? Do you want a traditional scope or a red dot?

Use a toilet paper roll and just tape it to the top. If you need more magnification you can use a paper towel roll.

depends entirely on what you wanna spend, way too many scopes out there ranging from dirt cheap and chitty to 3-4k god-tier glass


would recommend not cheaping out too much on a scope, vortex makes some nice ones that won't break ur wallet's angus (3-400$ range)

I wouldn't think a traditional scope would be much good on a gun like that. We would call that more of a brush gun, meaning you would want almost no magnification and fast target acquisition.

A red dot if you must, or even receiver (peep) sites would serve you well.

I’ve got an older Nikon buck master 3x fixed scope that’s a solid hunting scope. Would sell it to you srs for like $40.

Have a vortex diamondback 3-9x on my 30-06 and it works pretty well.

I'd imagine a 1.4-6x kinda scope would do nicely, crank it up to the 4-5x range for 150-200 yard shots, lower for close in stuff

should also consider any future use of it, a good scope will outlast the rifle as you move into other areas and saves you from having to buy twice

Ya, that makes sense.

I have trouble finding critters in thick bush with any magnification, but 1.4 is a good compromise.

Def not more than the rifle itself - so I have a plethora of options. Since starting this thread I think I'm just going to go with a red dot (smallest dot I can find), and put a flip in magnifier behind it.

Buy 2-3 boxes of ammo and go plinking with iron sights. If you aren't happy with how it shoots, put a low end 2x-7x scope on it and see how it shoots now. If you like it, keep it or sell the low end 2x-7x on Craigslist or your local ******** marketplace and buy a better quality 2x-7x scope.

Vortex makes good red dots in the $250 to $450 range. Eotech makes good ones in the $500 to $700 range.

No, I wasn't implying a 30-30 was anything but a great caliber, however it has its limitations. Limitations that would make a $4000.00 scope seem silly. No hate for it, but a square peg, round hole. If 150 yards is your max expected range, take the $4000.00, buy a good red dot or good quality low power scope for a grand, and buy a used ATV with the extra $3000.

Shot my first deer with a thirty thirty , so certainly no hate for it, but thats like putting 20" rims and racing slicks on a jetta. Just doesn't need it. An expensive and presumably high power scope would actually be a detriment on that imo

Lol. How far do you think a 30-30 will shoot? I have a marlin 30-30 with like a 300 dollar scope and ive shot quite a few deer with it.

Go with the proven Aimpoint PRO if you want a red dot. I have three on ARs.

Not heard good things about the Leupold red dot.

See this is the problem with online shopping. I was looking for aesthetics and potentially coulda made a bad purchase. Thanks for the info. It corroborates other opinions I've found online.

I've had a 3x9x40 Nikon Prostaff on my .308 for years and it's a solid scope. Very clear/bright in low light conditions. Make sure to get good mounts/rings too.

I have pretty much the same gun. I didnt scope mine. If I wanted to it looks like it would require gunsmith work though.

Its a 30/30, you won't be sniping any animals at great distance...

Get the best 3-16x40 scope you can afford. Look at Vortex for a good value.

Good call on the Marlin, have a Marlin lever action 30-30 myself, my main deer rifle. Not the dark though.

Put a Nikon ProStaff 3x9x40 on mine, plenty for that rifle in my opinion.

I have a Marlin 336 stainless/laminate combo with a 3x9x40 Prostaff like several mentioned above
It's a godsend if you find yourself deep in the timber trying to crack a shot off at deer thru the brush cleanly
I love it and it's one of my favorite pieces but admittedly does not see much action anymore

There is specialized ammo that can get you a decent group on paper out to 200+, but it's a pretty underpowered round so be warned it does not perform well on live targets at that distance and beyond

Also if you do scope it out, make sure and get a hammer extension or hammer spur to add on
It's significantly harder to cock the hammer back with the scope in the way
