Misc Tradies, I need some help. Can you identify the type of wood this is?

These are old cabinets that are going to be refinished. I want to know what kind of wood it might be. On r\c right now but will rep for help/advice.

Not a tradie but I'm into guitar woods and it looks like black walnut, probs a veneer. Could be wrong on both.

Definitely looks like a laminate to me also, but hard to tell 100% just from pictures.

The wood is real I think. Every cabinet door has the same pattern on the front and back. And based on the nature of this place, the builders/previous owners didn’t go cheap with anything.

That's not how real wood grain works though brah. You will have vast differences in the character of the grain on a real board just by flipping it over.

I guess its stuff like the corners that make it look real to me then. The lines seem to follow one another

Hmmm, that picture does change things a little bit. You could maybe take a door off and drill/cut into that inside edge to verify? I'm not sure exactly how the laminate process works but if my hunch is correct they take one large flat piece and then roll it over the edge to give the appearance of a solid piece of wood.

What are the plans for the refinish, just a different toned stain?

Just a darker/chocolate brown finish. This cabinet set is from the 60’s I think, lots of fading and nicks in the wood. I’ll try to verify before investing anything into this, thanks for the advice.

Some sort of ugly ass oak. My co worker gel stained his cabinets (black) right over top of the existing stain. Said it turned out really good, he's got a nice place and lots of money so I believe him.

Oak's grain isn't usually that warped.

This is ash. Are you in Europe? Ash is used a lot here.

Ash is a closed grain wood.

The oak looks like that because it’s from a very old, huge tree.
