I’ve been thinking about trying to get a deer tag for 39

Mirin elk hunts.

I'm sitting down here in Texas trying to get into hunting whitetail, turkey, and hogs. Also attempting to get into fly fishing since I live so close to the gulf coast. Seems logical to take advantage of all the amazing game here. I have legit never had wild game before except a handful of times. Pretty sad to say.

My goal is to get me and my son a bow, but due to cost I may get myself a rifle (Marlin probably?) and gift him my old bb gun from when I was a kid. I want to raise him to hunt and fish. I feel like it'll be an easier "in" to hunting to start with a rifle. But damn archery is so fun.

You could find some good quality bows, for cheap these days. A lot of the newer 1s just have smaller quality of life upgrades.

I started off with a PSE ferocity for $600 which I would definitely recommend. Apparently Diamond infinite edge is great for newbies and will last you and your kid. I bet you can find a second hand 1 for cheap

Good idea, I'll take a look around. Every time I went to the pro shops they try to push Hoyt and Matthews. Which is fine if it's inside my budget but lettuce be real here.. lol

Not really any elk here.

I wouldn't pay big money to hunt something, which is what a trip to Alberta to hunt them would likely be.

Ill stick with the freezer fill in my area.

That said, Would love to hunt them.

Then if you get a tag traveling to that location. Selecting a random bit of wilderness to hunt. Then going out and making it happen is daunting AF. That's precisely what I'm looking at if I want a DIY elk hunt. For someone who's busy and wealthy it really makes more sense to hunt a private ranch. This year I won't be able to make it happen but next winter I intend on getting an elk. I'd really like to hunt a bison as well since I eat so much bison meat but that's pretty much limited to private land.

Guys like Remi Warren and Cameron Hanes are out there consistently dropping numerous elk per year on public land. But Remi literally spends 100 days per year living in a tent in the mountains. And Cameron has like 30+ years experience and a bunch of high level contacts to get on a good spot.

I would if I could leave home in the morning and be back home the same day. The closest elk to me are a 14 hour drive. But I see deer all the time in my back yard. Country living.

yeah dude, you don't need to drop $1500+ for a quality bow. Trust me, coming from a guy that has the newest Matthews

Mad at myself I never got in to hunting. Tons of deer hunting where Im from in Illinois, just never got the appeal until more recently. I think an elk hunt would have got my blood pumping a little more. The whitetails around here though could almost be mistaken for a big agile dog though, that played a part.

Can relate on small bodied whitetails but here is an example of what a very average <150'ish? lb doe provides
Still a very decent yield

Backstraps, sirloins, shoulders, tenderloins

Everything else goes to the grinder

I've handled countless deer but the task of breaking down, packing, and processing an entire elk would still be intimidating af to me
Mirin hard you boyos that do it every year
