Just tried some new picks... how there is only a few ppl using dunlop gator grip picks? Just tried one, it feels SO GOOD. Can't decide between them and the Ultex (1.14) ones. (Gator grip has a better feel/grip; Ultex has the best sound)
Definitely better than tortex ones for me.
Can't stand Jazz III...what a waste of ....plastic.
Am I alone?

I end up having the pick sit in the middle of my thumb pad with the end of my thumb overshooting and getting in the way whenever I try to speed things up.
Having the grip there helps to remind me where to keep my thumb positioned.
I cant use larger picks after having used Jazz 3's for so long! Feels like I'm trying to pick with an oar!

Ultex is the most dynamic pick I've used. It can be warm and it can be bright depending on the attack. Only downside is it's invisible when you drop it. Several times I've wanted to switch to Tortex for that reason but the tone isn't as good. Anyway Jazz III fan here. Regular size picks feel like holding a Dorito.
Just realized I've been playing the same pick for at least 2 years. 1.35mm.

But like you said, when we talk about tone, nothing can beat the ultex.

Took a photo to see what a couple of years' playing has done to mine which is more than I realized however a brand new one doesn't sound as good without the beveling which is why I keep playing the same one*. For what it's worth I play 12-54 gauge in Eb.

It's interesting how Holdsworth used those ancient 1mm nylon Dunlop picks. Considering he didn't want any pick noise I always thought he would have used something thicker and beveled.

*Edit: decided to play a new one and actually don't mind it. Want to break the cycle of using the same pick.

I've tried a $30 pick, it's all just bullsh*t. These pics were made from fancy material with crazy beveling and grip, but they felt ****ing horrible because you can't tailor a pick to one picking style. You don't need to pay more than 50c-$1. I love medium size, a bit of stiffness but it needs to have some flex or else you can't do subtle playing as much. I need to feel like I am gripping something, you can move your fingers down further to get that small pick feel or more back to have more flap for chords.
There are picks I have used for years, I like to wear them in. Tommy Emmanuel played with the same pick for a decade.
You definitely need to find a pick that suits you but also remember that as you get better or your technique changes so will your pick. I used to use these black small ultra thick Dunlop picks and when I pick it up now I just laugh at how absurd it feels.

I always figured a red Jazz III like EJ uses would be a better choice for reducing pick noise.I think it makes sense that Holdsworth used those nylon picks as they seem the least intrusive in terms of introducing pick attack sound which I assume he tried to avoid.
Brett Garsed also uses those 1mm nylon picks."Jim Dunlop 1mm nylon picks. Nice dark tone without too much pick noise. Big factor is the reduced pick noise which is probably a reason for Allan preferring them although I have no idea if that's the case. They don't break either."
That's why it's so important to experiment because it's easy to dismiss certain accessories without trying them first. For me Ultex covers all bases. I like a brighter tone playing on the neck pickup and playing clean chordal stuff with delay and a warmer tone on the bridge pickup with some distortion. That's why I ditched the red Jazz IIIs a few years back because they were too warm.
Some of the picks I've tried. Andy Timmons uses the black Tortex Jazz IIIs. I preferred the purple one but still went back to old faithful.

I've been gravitating towards thicker picks again because I feel that they take less work to push through the string.
Not shred related but an extreme example of pick wear is Malcolm Young's nephew who replaced him in AC/DC. Tech says he burns through 30+ per show.

I think those *******s on reddit shadowbanned my post or something so I'm putting this here
I'm looking for a guitar pick like this:

with a body made of thin bendable plastic while the tip consists of thicker, solid material.
has anyone ever seen something like this or knows DIY solutions? I found nothing so far.

I used to cut and sand Dunlop tortex and gator picks into a Jazz III shape before they made them. Most picks are cheap so modify them until you're happy.

I was actually experimenting with a few different picks since I was recording guitars recently and wanted to limit the pick noise I was hearing in my playing. I've pretty much always played Dunlop Tortex .88mm but decided to try a few others for comparison like Jazz III, John Petrucci Jazz III, Dunlop Nylon, Fender Thin, and Dunlop Gator Grip.
I ultimately found that I got the best results just using the usual Tortex .88mm but playing with the pick flat against the string instead of edge picking.
I've always wondered why my guitar in recordings often times has pick noises and so much string scratching and I'm finally starting to understand just how important the angle in which I'm picking matters. When I'm recording I definitely try to pick with the pick as flat against the string as I can for more clarity.
This video kind of explains it a bit. Although I personally think it over emphasizes the pick material and thickness, since I was still getting pick chirps with softer/thinner picks I tested. The biggest difference for me was the pick angle.

Yeah 65 is still too young. One of the greatest, it takes a special person to influence a whole generation. Innovator like him, YJ etc all set the framework that makes learning guitar now so easy.
If you can get nearly any guitarist in any country listening to someone play something and go: "That sounds like X" then you know you've made it in the history books.

I'm a big fan of the early stuff but he pumped out some great riffs in Van Hagar and he finally had someone with the pipes to sing anything he wanted. Alex VH's drumming on Pleasure Dome never gets old.

Recently picked up an acoustic..about 6 months ago...part of my new stay at home Covid skills.
Got most of the "campfire" chords down, and can bang out a handful of simple three chord songs. Rhythm and timing is coming along.
I am looking for some direction on scales though, how to play them over the neck.
I understand how the major and minor scales are derived, but I am looking for some direction on exercises to get the scales down and memorize the fretboard. I dont want to buy any expensive books or pay for online lesson installments etc.
Thanks and reps for help.
Regards

Been looking for a nicer acoustic than my old Ibanez for 6 months now, came across this on FB Marketplace and bought it right away.

It's flawless, no dings or scratches and has it's own hardcase. 1st Mahogany Guitar and 1st one with an actual good case. Sounds very mellow and balanced, heavy and comfortable. I put my old one up for sale but since I'm not getting a lot of interest, I may try sanding down the bottom of the saddle and lighter strings and tuck it away for a campfire guitar, has high action that never bothered me but annoys anyone that I pass it to.

I even used the enormous 8.85mm Colossal pick from V-picks for a bit. That was an interesting pick and not like what you might expect a pick that thick to feel like.

Things I like in a pick are stiffness, durability, tone, and good beveling.
For awhile I was using a .75mm V-pick but right now I'm really into a 2.0mm Gravity pick that's shaped very similarly to the Jazz III.
I even used the enormous 8.85mm Colossal pick from V-picks for a bit. That was an interesting pick and not like what you might expect a pick that thick to feel like.
I really like ultex except for the fact that it seems to melt with every stroke. If you like ultex you'd probably really like those Red Bear picks but those are also very expensive.

For metal rhythm, I use V picks. I forget the name buts it’s somewhere around 3mm thick. Very nice picks.
For fast alternate picking and sweeps, I use the green tortex jazz picks. If I had to only use one pick, it would be these. I can absolutely fly with these. I like the Ernie Ball Prodigy too for this, but I bought a lifetime supply of the tortex jazz a few years ago.
I like the size of the Jazz III, but I don’t like the material.
I love the Dunlop Flows too. I have the Patrucci and Andy James versions. I have some of the standard sizes too. All are good.
I also have a boat load of the Dunlop.60 textured picks that Eddie used (RIP). I use those when my picking gets sloppy. After about an hour, I’m back to normal.
