Focusing on squats and pulls a little more at the moment right now while I give my cranky shoulders some time to heal, but making slow/steady progress on the 9 total pressing sets I'm doing per week (1 movement/3 sets/day, 3 day full body split) so I'll take it.

I have 1 week until meet day and then I'm going to give my shoulders a good long rest and get some medical attention.

Uh? No change for me.

I still think lifting weights is silly, same as I thought last week.

Cheers anyway.

When I kept picking my ass off the bench or kicking a leg around (not keeping it planted, SOLID, TIGHT as we would yell), my coach made me stick my legs straight out and put them on boxes until I could learn to control myself.

Leg drive helped get me to 225x5.

Good advice

Good post boyo. I have a question about standing barbell overhead press. I was doing a high volume routine, and eventually the inner part of my elbow started hurting during the negative portion of that lift... about when it got level with my nose. Even dropping the weight by over 50% and it would hurt just as bad. I stopped lifting for a while but it still bothers me sometimes. Do you think it's just a more severe case of tendinitis, and I need to do some strengthening exercises for the tendons, before I hit the weights hard again?

Using legs to push yourself on bench is literally the biggest cope, they should just be used to stabilize yourself

It's most likely tendinitis. I would recommend doing reverse grip tricep pushdowns, one handed with a mini band or very light weight on a cable stack. 4 sets of 25 every day after your normal workout. You can also ice your elbows after if they're sore. Do this for a couple of weeks and see how your elbows feel. I recommend this movement to everyone who is doing a lot of pressing, even if your elbows are feeling fine.

Chitty. Shoulders are still wonked, gonna hit some triples today, maybe throw a slingshot on for a couple sets, and not going to barbell bench for 5-6 weeks. Going on vacation starting tomorrow and then when I come back gonna run a very different program for a few weeks to give my shoulders a break and hopefully build up some hellacious conditioning/work capacity.

Do a few sets of YTWL with 5lb DBs before and after you bench. Then start doing them 3 days a week for a while. Should help.

I'm heading to the ortho next week to check out both shoulders. Still benching tonight, probably stick to the 3-board and bench against bands, since that's what everyone else is planning to do.

YTWL?

My current warmup I do a 3-4 sets each of band pullaparts, face pulls, tri pulldowns, and cable crunches. It definitely helps getting the shoulders/elbows moving before pressing.

Good thread.

Belt recommended?
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Everyone has a different preference. I have an old Inzer lever belt (it's like 20 years old) that works great for me. Some people prefer a thinner belt and some people are even benching without a belt (in a shirt), which I don't like and don't recommend.
The one thing I suggest for everyone is to get some kind of lever belt. Much easier to get on and off, and to make as tight as you want. Prong belts (especially 2-prong belts) are clumsy and they get stuck.

This is awesome man. Monday was my first time going heavy (for me) on flat bench in over a year. I hit 305 for 1. Maybe could have got 315 but it has been a while and I don’t have a spotter. I really wish I had this info on Monday lol. I’m going to use this information next time and hopefully hit 315 (if I have a spotter). Do you think a belt would help? Never tried wearing one on bench. I have a pioneer single prong. 10mm thick 3” wide. Thanks for the tips man, I’ll use them for sure!
