Gaze upon my meat (hunter crew thrad)
A couple days ago, I shot this big boi.

Now it's time to pack him up. He's been aging since Wed in the fridge, Dexter Morgan style in trash bags. Now it's time to dispose of the body.

Wife of the year helping with deboning. Meat ended up in either chunk stew meat (left), or the scrap pile center. Anything borderline was thrown through the Kitchenade grinder in the background.

****ing metal. We did two front shoulders last night...we'll do the hind quarters tomorrow.

Gaze upon my meat.

Nice buck. My dad got a big bodied small rack buck yesterday. We use a homemade walk-in cooler and quarter them out wrap in plastic and age for about 7-10 days at 41 F before we finish processing. The enzymes break down the meat a little and make it incredibly tender and mild. Similar to high end beef. Most people don’t realize how big of a difference it makes. Nice work.
I’ll be taking some vacation the first two weeks of November to archery hunt the rut.

How long did it take to learn how to carve an entire deer? How big is the cleaning process, removing the blood, intestines etc?
Do you chainsaw the head off? How long will 1 deer provide for 1 person meat wise?
How much money would it cost to buy an entire deer in the grocery store if you bought steaks?
Mirin hard.

Last year I learned the "gutless method" to processing a deer - it's definitely faster than gutting the deer first but because of the weight of this guy, there was no way I was dragging him with his guts. - Cleaning process happens a few different ways. Gutless method is probably the easiest -
- Head comes off with a sawzall / reciprocating saw. Cut the muscle around the neck all the way, then just sawzall the spine.
- Depending on the size of a deer, you could eat it for half a year. Figure a big deer will yield 60-70 lbs of meat but most people don't eat venison every day.
- I dunno...say $10/lb for cheaper beef steak...maybe $5-700 at that price?

Never felt the need to split pelvis. When you remove hindquarter, you cut the meat free from pelvis and separate at joint.
Freezer was getting empty so just butchered a bear into all ground and froze on Wed.
Set trail cam last night and had a doe walk by it this morning at 7:12. When I see some headgear ill start getting excited.
Good buck. Repped

It's an Excalibur matrix G340.

I took off the quiver since I carry the arrows on my pack instead. 230 lb draw weight, but a recurve so no cams or anything. I like the Excalibur bows since you can change the strings out in the field, no cams to worry about. The only downside is that you *need* a cocking rope or mechanical cocking device. Big fan of this bow.
I tried this reverse draw bow out for some season and it turned out to be a massive POS. It wouldn't stabilize arrows...they'd corkscrew through the air. I still killed some deer with it but...POS.

Nice, your hunting threads are always pretty interesting. Where did you learn to hunt/dress/butcher? I feel like it's one of those things that people either grow up doing or have hard time getting into. I remember seeing something about MI having a program where rangers or something take noobs hunting, but I haven't heard of too many other programs that are similar.
