Most insurance is a scam designed to NOT get paid out. However, I'd always invest in a just in case scenario. You need car insurance, home insurance or contents insurance (at least against fire and water damage). Life insurance is paid to someone else so if you have a family it's smart.

But yes, I'd say the biggest scam ever is the wedding industry. From "two months' salary" requirement for a ring to inflated prices on everything like flowers, photography, a dress you wear ONCE, food, etc you can guarantee that something is triple the price if it has wedding in front of it. And think about what that's for - a party - one that nobody really cares about and is basically an excuse for the bride or her family to show off and receive money just because they decided to legally merge. Total garbage.

Came to say warranties. But also to defend restaurants who raise menu price for doordash.

Doordash is a double edged sword. During covid it's a huge business saver. However they take a cut of your charges so they raise to compensate.

In and out burger still doesn't offer doordash. It wouldn't add more sales since kitchen is always producing at max and they'd just end up paying a big chunk to doordash if they did.

Yup you hit the nail on the head.

Diamond rings and weddings are two of the biggest scams in our culture. Diamonds are only worth what they are because of marketing. They used to basically be worthless. But great marketing and using movies/tv shows/celebs/commercials started to show diamond rings as the way to show you love someone. Then of course someone made up the fake "this many months pay" for how much to spend.

Weddings right now are equal to college. At least college is 4 years. Weddings are 1 day. I mean the women's daughters at my work are spending 30k+ on weddings with 8k photographers, 5k DJs, 20k for the banquet hall, and everything else to go with it.

Fuk that. That is just idiocy. But again, thanks to movies and t shows, all women need to have the perfect wedding and make it all about the perfect 10k dress they wear for a few hours, and walking down an aisle, and then expensive food and all this fukking overpriced bullchit for people who are just there to get some food and be a part of something to get drunk.

I can go on and on about this chit. Being around females at work all day and learning about all the behind the scenes thinking on this stuff absolutely has blown my mind to the point I don't know if there is a female out there that hasn't deep throated the ideas of needing expensive rings and weddings for marriage and self worth.

I have another good one.

Realtor fees.

Brb find home on zillow myself, drive myself to home, worthless realtor walks me around house, is now somehow deserving of 5% of sale. Especially buyers agents.

Complete scam of an industry. Closing costs lmao.

Should be just paying a lawyer to hash out contracts and work with bank directly for the mortage. That's not worth upwards of 10 to 20k that a realtor gets

I only somewhat understand if are selling a 20mm property and need someone to provide white glove hand holding type service to the wealthy buyers. At that level the extra fees to gain a successful sale are negligible.

But homes under 2 million....lmao at realtors deserving 5%

Can't wait for them to be obsolete

like if I sell a car for 100k I don't pay a dude x% commission etc.

But a 100k house requires a sloot to walk around and show it and she now gets a large fee....stupid

Oh man. That's a good one. At least selling realtor stages home advises on price and holds open houses. Frankly that isn't worth 1% either .

Once rented a car from an airport Enterprise and returned it to a branch location. when i returned the car, they couldn't find my reservation in their system. Then when the dude went outside to get the mileage and chit, he discovered that there was a decent sized scrape on the fender (i legit didn't notice it, somebody must've hit it in a parking lot the night before)

not only did they not come after me for the damage, but when they finally got around to charging my card for the "phantom rental" that wasn't in their system, they only charged me for one day lol. I didn't buy the LDW. Enterprise ain't too shabby, srs (although their sister brand National has the better vehicles)

You do, it's just worked into the price. But agreed. And realtors are gonna knocked down to their rightful place amongst tradie scum soon enough thanks to the websites that make it easy to find a house, and can generate a reasonable sales agreement and offer an online lawyer to review the contract with you for a nominal fee.

Cot dayum what mainstream products aren't a scam?

I'll add 95% of all "charities" to the mix.

brb keeping 90% of the money for ourselves, paying no taxes, negging our employees into accepting artificially low wages, and stroking monster executive bonuses every year.

There are pretty good oversight groups that will see where the charity's money goes - yeah, some are shady but most are good

Ti 83 graphing calculators.

A complete overpriced racket. Can get free software for a phone to do it, but school districts require students to buy these 200 dollar calculators that's are from 1985.

I swear the mob is involved.

Also college text books.

can't google the answers during exams on them...that's the only reason honestly. I wonder what TI's margins on them are, though.

I personally believe that smartphones, TV's, and new auto's etc. are the biggest scams at the moment. Those are all things that can drain people for hundreds/thousands of dollars per month that just depreciate in value rapidly until they get sucked into the next advertising campaign for the new product.

Vehicles are the killer for the middle class. Big screen TV's, Smartphones, and Apple products are killers for the poor. Especially plebs that make less then 30K per year. I swear at least 90% of people living on government aid has an Iphone, the ear pods, etc.

Thats just being consumerism and the United states as a whole is a consumerist nation. We buy buy, upgrade next year. Its all depending on sale projections or the "economy is failing" because people are not buying ****

People saying weddings are correct. Those are probably the worst, from the artificially way overpriced diamond rings to the party itself.

Not to mention the divorce rates. If your marriage ends in divorce, then it makes the scam like 10x worse than it already was, and you have a damn decent shot at eventual divorce these days. It's damn near a coin flip statistically.

Unfortunately, women as a whole have been brainwashed into the idea of stupidly expensive weddings. It's tough to find one who would be okay without spending a minimum of $20-$30k on one for a one night party that provides zero material assets of note for the price. I'd fkn laugh if a broad ever tried roping me into that bs expensive wedding idea ever again. Abso-fkn-lutely not. Marriage is already a big enough risk for men financially if she decides she gets bored and bails for a ride on the ol' carousel.
