Has he heard of a thing called light refraction? The ground's (land or water) temperature difference causes atmospheric distortion allowing the light to slightly bend around the earth. Quite well observed by English naval officers from hundreds of years ago...*yawn*

So your saying even though they tell us we can't see 3 miles away, "refraction" let's us see 4x the distance, and beyond, with not a centimeter lost in height or any distortion...
