Awesome. Love it. I remember him saying Surfing with the Alien made a big impact on him early on.

What I'll always remember about Ed is at a time when a lot of guitarists were taking themselves ways too seriously pouting and doing Blue Steel poses he always looked like he was having a great time.

If you guys are ever wanting a cheap project guitar, i would highly recommend the stuff from rondo music.

I just bought one of their really low priced teles, and it is pretty amazing for ~100.

Had to polish the frets and file 1 fret end, and change the strings, but it plays and sounds just as good as my $800 tele.

One of my good friends is really good fingerstyle and his nails are not noticeably long.

Maybe it's a thing these days and I'm not aware but what's up with ripping off licks? There's a famous Steve Lukather Rosanna lick in there and not inspired either but note for note.

He does the same thing with a descending Martin Miller lick around 40s below. Incredible technique of course but the AH track sounds more like Gambale mixed with Guthrie Govan.

It takes some serious commitment to go all in with a technique like that. Like Stanley Jordan back in the early 80s with the two handed tapping long before it was a thing. I guess it starts with a moment of "is this possible?" and then you've got to wait years to find out.

Yeah he really did go all in. That's not for me, but he is amazing at it. I think when other guitarists are starting to tap with 8 fingers you enter the realm of playing shapes and not notes. You might as well play the piano. Max I do with tapping is 6 fingers. Left hand and middle+ring on right, that's enough to do whatever I want with tapping.

I actually was frustrated the other day while I jammed for 30min over some tunes with some muscle memory patterns kicking in. I was deliberately trying to phrase in a way I normally don't but my fingers felt the urge to play the usual tricks/approaches. I am now reading up and learning new songs from different genres to try discover some new phrasings. I hate it when I start playing default passages, I get bored quickly - and I get bored listening to players who do the same.

You can't avoid it totally but you should try limit it to minimum 2/3 of your playing being programmed playing with slight variations. You can mix note groupings up but you really need to get your fingers to approach phrasing differently. One good exercise I do is I pick 4 notes and I only have those 4 notes. I am allow to bend, slide into, tap, harmonics, hybrid pick anything I want as long as it's those 4 notes. If you can play interestingly enough for 60 seconds like that then you're in a good spot.

Back to Stanley it's crazy how far back he was playing like this. I love this video too:



He would have that Holdsworth "I see every note at the same time on the fretboard" ability.

It's impossible to play with a pizzicato technique and mute the overtones while using distortion.

When plectrum players do, yes, as there is no reason. Back in the 80's, you'd get shot using a sock or something over the nut. That was part of shred guitar - the string damping aspects.

Most of the time when he's playing he's muting - it's only when he switches hand position to traditional i/m where he needs the muter, so it's whatever. It's not a crutch, though, it's just cheating.

In some cases there is no other way. When you use a lot of drive and play loud it's impossible to tap without that sock.

Great advice. It's been a long time since I've structured my practice and doing whatever you feel like can waste a lot of time. Years pass and you're playing 90% of the same stuff. That's why I think it's really important to write music and record it somewhere regardless of whether anyone ever hears it. That way you're at least stockpiling musical ideas instead of just wanking notes into the ether.

For me it's all about the end result so I don't really care if he drapes a piece of cloth over the strings to make it sound cleaner. z4v4 is right that back in the 80s it would have looked weird but then not everything from the 80s has aged well.
