Counting calories and macros is quite pointless unless you're going to go into the minutiae of bioavailability of different foods, activity levels, thyroid function and etc. You can never be absolutely precise on either side of the equation, especially the calories out, unless you're going to go full autismode and have a lab or something. I much prefer to just eyeball things and have a rough idea, and it works just as well if not better, I know people who count calories and make barely any gains nor lose much fat.

I'm not saying what you consume doesn't matter, it absolutely does, but the act of counting and tracking I find totally cringe and mostly pointless.
I'm noticing something like this happening as well. Now that I have a basic idea of how much calories I'm getting and I'm generally taking it a bit easier with the strictness of my diet, I find I look much fuller and more 'muscular' in general. Then again it makes sense, when I was cutting I was on pretty low cals and low carbs, depleted of glycogen, so I tended to look a bit 'flat' despite generally being leaner. I like this better, though. For the time being anyways. I know I'll want to cut down in the future again. I do genuinely like the challenge.

a calorie is a calorie/energy balance is the biggest lie the sugar/beverage industry push to this day to remove any liability for the poison they sell. straight out of big tobacco's play book.

I've done both. Both had the same outcome except cico was ten fold easier. (Both aesthetics and performance)
What's your protein minimum? I see miscers talking about easily hitting their daily protein intake, without even trying, and I know they most likely do not track their macro's or are out of touch. Average American diet is likely around 50-75G of protein per day. Someone who makes an effort to eat high protein but doesn't just eat a ton all day is likely getting closer to 100-130g of protein per day.

Yesterday I was busy as hell. 7oz of bison for my first meal. 6oz of bison for my second meal. 4.5oz of Salmon for my third meal. 1 red pepper. 350 grams of white rice total throughout the day. (I try to follow the Vertical diet as it works well for my digestion). Had some grapes and a banana thrown in for a mid afternoon snack.

I just plugged it all into MFP. 2401 calories. 359G of carbs. 47G of fat. 133G of protein.

I was supposed to slide a steak and sweat potatoes in there but I was too busy. (Like them both cooked fresh as opposed to pre cooked.) Average person that does not track calories isn't getting much more protein then that unless they prep their own meals and weigh them.

It’s individual imo. As long as you hit your protein mark, you can do whatever you want with fats/carbs. I personally prefer to keep fats at least 50% of my cals. Where as most people probably like having more carbs.

Been experimenting with Jay Cutlers idea of higher carb on training days with lower P/F and on off days higher P/F and lower carbs. Yesterday I hit the gym with 269G of carbs in my system and performance was excellent. Really good pump. Lots of energy. Etc.

In the future on training days I think I'm going to make an effort to get around 300g of carbs throughout the day and after working out maybe 50-75g of carbs. On off days maybe 275-300g of carb total for the day.

Unlike the OP the longer I've been in the lifting world (13+ years) I'm beginning to see that macro's and nutrient timing is more important then I previously thought.

People overcomplicate fitness/nutrition/general health for a few simple reasons. Sometimes they just get bored too easily with keeping it simple. Sometimes they want to make a bigger deal out of it than it is for attention and validation. Of course, a lot of people are simply prone to sheep herd think mentality with the way the fitness/supplement/dieting/physicall wellness industries bombard society with stupid concepts for the sake of making money. Lastly, overcomplicating it provides a rock solid layer of cope and excuses for people who will ultimately not put the effort in regardless of their initial approach.

There really isn't any point in trying to inform/debate people you hear openly discussing dumb ideas about fitness/nutrition unless they are your close relative or something. 99% of the time, they are going to think what they want no matter what. Thus, they will seek out confirmation for what they want to believe, and will be dismissive when they hear things that go against it. Quite often, they will get pissy with you over it no matter how polite ane nice you try to be about it. So, it's rarely worth bothering with much. Focus on yourself and let them do/think what they want. If they want your advice and are open minded at all, they will ask you for it and act accordingly.

Ok. You want me to send food logs lol. I was in a surplus from July 2019 to March 2020. 3600-3800 cals a day until November and then with him from November to March. Most of the time I was was at 3400 rest days and 4200-4800 training days

It's almost like maybe you're wrong about macros being pointless and we're right about fluid metabolisms

We've pushed carbs to 650 in the last 3 weeks after my diet and body comp hasn't budged

I’ve been taking in 3200-3400 and maintaining my weight. Last year I was maintaining at 2400. Haven’t built my metabolism as much as this guy, but he also has more muscle than me. It’s possible.

Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Bulking

High carb low fat bulking == you can eat more since most surplus from carbs will be wasted calories. Carbs turn to glucose/stored as glycogen first > then burned of as heat (for bodily processes) > and then to fat via de novo lipogenesis (which also is an energy requiring process lol. Also, this is hard to occur at a significant rate unless at massive surplus.) So cals in cals out is not violated. Its just that your Cals out increased by metabolic trickery lol.

High fat low carb bulking == you will put on significant amount of more fat than high carb bulking since fat is easily and readily stored by our bodies. But this doesn't mean one shouldn't eat fat at all.

Cutting
---------
Protein has to be high and the rest doesn't matter lol. Just gotta be in deficit and eat whatever "macro" will keep your hunger at bay.

Those are the only times "Macros' matter. Cals in Cals out is still the law no matter what.
This is pretty much where I'm coming from. But I forgot that this forum doesn't "believe" in bulking lol

TLDR: matters more in a surplus, but also useful in a deficit. Utilize carbs intelligently around training to aid in recovery and jump start parasympathetic nervous system. Keep fats out of high carb meals. In a surplus, excessive fats over what's needed for basic bodily function is pretty unnecessary, so high carb, mod protein and "low" (50-60g) of fat is prudent.

Why keep fat out of high carb meals? I imagine the logic that the insulin response will store the fat more easily? But wouldn't a high protein + fat meal also store fat easily by that same logic because of the insulin response from protein? Plus I was under the impression that insulin isn't required for fat to be stored

Totally agree with using carbs around training. I do things a bit differently though. I’m a high fat, low carb guy. I still keeps fats and carbs separate. I do take in about 150g fat per day though. My first 4 meals are protein and fat heavy. Then I train. Then I do my last meal high protein high carb. In a sense, carb “back-loading”.

I didn't before no. Macros before at the highest were like 500c, 100f, 225p. When I started my cut we were at 750c, 65f, 300p.

Current macros reversing out of cut:

Training Day Macros: 4,095 Calories
250g Protein
650g Carbohydrates
55g Fat

M1: 64g protein, 27g fat, trace cal green veggies
Immediate Pre/Intra: 100g carbs
M2 (Post workout): 62g protein, 350g carbs
M3: 62g protein, 200g carbs
M4: 62g protein, 28g fat, trace cal green veggies

Non Training Day Macros: 2,920 Calories
250g Protein
300g Carbohydrates
80g Fat

M1: 64g protein, 200g carbs
M2: 62g protein, 38g carbs, 30g fat

"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."
