China has been cutting down on Islamic citizens but claims to be a country where religion can be freely expressed

So why are they so against Muslims, is it because Muslims resist conformity? Or is it something more dire? I've been reading so many articles but all they state is what China is doing I'm not understanding underlying policies and belief systems.

The Northwestern region of Xinjiang - majority Turkic Uyghurs - was conquered by China in the 1750s. Ever since then they've been trying to gain independence - look up the East Turkestan independence movement - while China is having none of it. There were also numerous riots and attacks carried out by extremists - see the Kunming Station knife attack where 8 attackers/organizers killed 31 people and injured 141 more.

No doubt that the Chinese exaggerate some of the attacks and cases and push fake news as well, but it's not exactly fun and games.

OP the Chinese government would like to eliminate all religion as it threatens obedience to the state. Islam happens to be the modern "religion" that is most incompatible with a civilized, non-10th century society, so it is in the limelight. This group went from terrorists to be exterminated to oppressed victims in the US governments eyes in just a few years! They are a very small portion of the Uighur population but responsible for a lot of terrorist attacks on law enforcement and civilians.

There is no Uighur genocide, their population has been exploding over the last decade and life goes on as normal there for the vast majority of people (most of them fully support the CCPs measures). Wages, education levels and living standards are rising fast too - its one of the most economically backwards parts of the country.

The 'one million detained' figure is based of a sketchy testimony from a few asylum seekers and a religious (christian) zealot who is on a crusade against China, and some blurry drone footage.

At most it is a heavy handed crackdown to a real problem with innocent people caught up in the middle and abuses likely happening on the individual level. It is not genocide or mass systematic oppression.

At a deeper level the US see Xinjiang as a potential route to their long term goal of breaking China up, and the non stop attacks and Uighur stories are just ways to prime the public in the West to hate China and support war/more escalation in the future. Its pure war propaganda, plain and simple.
