There has been studies on this.

People who become paralyzed become very sad. People who win the lottery become very happy. But measured again after a year or so, they are both back to their same level happiness as they were before.

As founder of Nike said when he became filthy rich:

I asked myself: what are you feeling?
It wasn’t joy. It wasn’t relief.
If I felt anything, it was regret?
Good God, I thought. Yes. Regret.
Because I honestly wished I could do it all over again.

I fell asleep for a few hours. When I woke it was cold and rainy. I went to the window. The trees were dripping water. Everything was mist and fog. The world was the same as it had been the day before, as it had always been. Nothing had changed, least of all me. And yet I was worth 178 million.

Plenty of successful peoples favourite books are such as "Remains of the day", "On shortness of life" etc, because life is really short and you only got one shot at it and no rewinds.

Set a new goal to make it worse

Gotta keep chasing something
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

The only way that's logically possible is if I died today.

If I die today, well that would suck for my children to grow up without a father.

I do have a nice insurance policy, so at least they wouldn't be left in a bad financial spot.

I still would try my best keep it from getting worse.

It's like aging. After certain age, physically it's really hard to get better than right now.

The moment you stop trying, your living stops and dying starts.

I think humans are built to be a lot more resilient than we think. We underestimate how much we can handle in the face of tragedy but also overestimate how happy certain things will make us (like money).

@ your bolded statement, in both instances, people from both groups would experience initial shock (happiness or sadness), but as time goes on, their circumstances becomes the new norm for them as they begin to adapt. People bounce back from tragic situations all the time and the lottery winners will start to find less satisfaction in the money as they shift to a new lifestyle. There's a reason why the phrase "money can't buy happiness" was coined.

Yeah, people often way overestimate how happy "big things" will give them. Daniel Gilbert is a great source on it, both his talks and book Stumbling on Happiness
