Alright I've have an insane week from last Friday til this afternoon when it finishes out. Last Friday one of my mom's dogs was going to have surgery to remove a mass on his back, just a 2 year old rottie and she was worried to death so my wife and I came to help. Get the dog to the vet after the two hour drive to Chattanooga and they put him to sleep and 3 different vets could not find the mass anywhere. Great news! We go back to her house to celebrate. She's a smoker and my wife will not let her smoke around our 1 year old so she went on the back porch with the dogs to smoke. This porch is around 18-20 foot up on a semi slanted slope on the back of a older split level home. We had a local "carpenter" redo the porch that was from the original build of the house. I decide to go out and play with the dogs on the porch as well. I randomly look at the joist the porch is attached to and see it is basically almost off and say something to my mom that we need to get off the porch. As soon as I said that, the entire porch collapsed. The whole "slow motion" people experience was opposite this time. I didn't even have time to grab something before I'm on the ground with blood squirting everywhere. My main fear was my mom was dead of course, and she is kind of laying on the plastic dog house still under the rest of the hanging porch.








I ended up with a broken foot and the cut to the head. Mom ended up with 6 broken ribs and a lacerated spleen and a huge hematoma on her backside. She has been in the hospital for a week today. They were going to release her 3 days ago, and we decided to wait until the morning. Morning comes and her hemaglobin dropped close to 7 and they said she can't go til it goes back up. It went up the next day and then they said her o2 levels were too low and she can't leave. They also lost her blood vial 3 times, and drew the wrong tube the 5th time to check her HGB. I forgot to say my mom has been a lab manager for 25 years and knows what she is talking about when it comes to this type of stuff. So she is discharging herself and is in a huge battle with the entire hospital, and I'm going to get her today at 230. They told her she needs an oxygen tank to keep her levels up yesterday afternoon and they told her it would take days to get that order put in. So wish me luck brahs.

Oh I got a police report and a lawyer ready. Just have to get everything settled. My mom has stressed me the fuk out about leaving the hospital, I'm glad we are finally saying fuk it and getting it done today. Lawyer said insurance has to cover everything if you discharge yourself, nothing illegal about it. The stress of 3 big dogs and a 1 year old plus my wife and my job, traveling 2 hours everyday to Chattanooga is finally about over. Apparently the carpenter nailed the porch into a rotten joist, you can see it in the picture if you zoom in.

It's just crazy you think in situations like this you will be ready to try something, the ****ing dogs reacted quicker than I did. I had zero reaction time. Also I landed on a conrete flow bed, my mom landed on the doghouse which I think saved her life to be honest, shes 69 years old.

Crazy chit, I don't imagine the local handyman has any insurance or significant assets to go after in a lawsuit though. Unless you can get a lawyer to take the case on a contingency, it's probably not worth the legal expense.

Also super scary that the porch was only done 1 year ago. I have one that's similar set up to yours. I've been inspecting mine and have been wanting it redone. I'll be sure to ask for copies of insurance certificates from whoever I end up hiring. This is quite scary.

Glad you aren't dead. Hospitals do that **** all the time trying to keep you there longer to rack up the bills. Everything is a scam nowdays. Maybe you should have hired a competent person instead of the cheapest crack head you could find off craigslist?

Down in the dirty (where OP is) 99% of personal injury and liability attorney's work on contingency. If the guy has no insurance they'll just straight up tell you not to waste your time thoughThis is a good rule of thumb when having any work done if you aren't a personal friend of the person doing it and even then its a risk not to. Also make sure to check those effective dates on the policy. I've heard of guys carrying around expired policies hoping no one would notice

I was taken by some ******* plumber before and had to take him to court so I'm not making that same mistake again and trusting people bc I give them the benefit of the doubt that they're 'hard working good people'. fck that. I get copies of their certificates from the issuing agency that maintains the policy now to make sure it's actually valid. Literally have called right in front of them as I'm staring at their cert asking for a copy to be sent to me.
