Someone was saying McAfee's benchmark old no 8 is almost exactly the same as buffalo trace. I got a 1.75 of it for $18... seems like a good deal?

both made by same company. worth trying at the price. seems well reviewed but i've never had it.

Not a bourbon, but I recently tried a dram of Oban 14 single malt scotch, and sadly I was not really impressed by it. I just wanted more out of it. Don't get me wrong, it was good but for a 14-year old Highland I expected more.

I was camping in a small town over the weekend and checked into the local liquor store and lo and behold, I found the hard to find Ancient Age 10 Star.

At $25.50 for 1.75L I had to buy 2. Very impressive taste for a bargain sipper. The regular Ancient Age is average at best, but the 10 Star is very nice. I've read several times that this is the same mashbill as Blanton's?

Whiskey overlords, I have a question for you all. I've had quite a few whiskeys in my life, from low end to high end. I've never been able to stomach any of them, even on the rocks and slightly watered down. This past weekend I had the first whiskey I've ever actually been able to drink. Angel's Envy Rye. Can you all share your wisdom as to why this may be, and what other whiskey's or rye's I may like based on this taste..preferably less than $85 a bottle?

If it helps, some of the ones I remember that I just can't do are: Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Michters (I think,) Knob Creek, Johnny Walker Black, and Masterson's,

I was shocked when I liked the AE and really want to find some brown stuff I enjoy that doesn't cost me too much. Thanks for the help

Edit: I guess another question I have is, what was your journey like to find your tastes and explore new drinks? Did you go to a lot of tastings, taste with friends, or just blind test with buying bottles at the store (seems risky for me at this stage)?

Man, I'm not sure...maybe you're a rye guy...maybe try some higher proofs?

Check out an Islay Scotch...completely different from Johnny Walker Black and any bourbon

Blind buy 8/10 times...well semi blind...occasionally get some recommendations from buddies/coworkers...every now and again I'll try something at a bar. That might be the play for you either bar or restaurant...at least do this if you end up trying an Islay scotch, so you don't potentially waste a bottle

Managed to score a pour of Redbreast 27 yo at Whiskey Cake last week. Not a lot of whiskey's worth the price for a pour but this one I really enjoyed. Would do it again.

Nothing fancy but I've been drinking a lot of Old Granddad recently and I think it's pretty super for the money.

Been drinking with club soda as a mixer since it's still pretty hot out, they go down easy.

Any recommendation for a nice scotch to try.

Someone ITT recommended Dalwhinnie 15 to me last year and that's probably my favorite bottle so far. Other browns i've liked:

Balvenie 12 or 15
Talisker. - it's almost overly smoky but i like it from time to time.
****** Single Barrel - this is nice but a little more difficult to find.

Balvenie Caribbean Cask is a good pour. If you want something good and smokey but not a lot of smoke, look for Lagavulin 16. Glenfiddich has a solid line up. Nothing OMG this is great but a solid line up IMO. Compass Box Hedonism is one of my favorites.


Picked up a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. It's the best rye I've ever had. Smooth, spicy and way to easy to drink.

I love Lagavulin 16, and I can usually find it at the local grocery store. Great bold, smokey flavor.

Scapa is awesome but I have to hunt for that one. A family friend of mine from Scotland recommended it to me awhile ago, and it's delicious. Very peaty.

Busy as fuk, so i had it delivered off the app and went for the only one they had even kinda close from this list of recommendations, so Lagavulin 8 is on the way.

Down to 4 bottles in my cabinet.

Two unopened bottles of Black Bush which were both gifts last Christmas and the Christmas before. I actually like Black Bush, and Bushmills in general, just haven't got around to opening them.

A bottle of ****** Malt, which is nearly gone.

And an unopened bottle of my favourite whiskey, Redbreast.

There is a steakhouse in West Seattle that has Lagavulin 16.
It pairs perfectly with steak!

Redbreast is my favorite Irish Whiskey. I had a chance to get a pour of the 27 yo Redbreast a few months ago. Amazing liquid.

i've been on makers mark train for the last couple of months and loving it.

Would like to try another of the similar price range...any recommendations?? Just really now starting to enjoy my whiskey neat so i look forward to trying what's out there.
