I pay £200/month($260) for something I've used once in 27 years to repair an ear perforation which took 2 years until surgery from first seeing my GP.

So you are mad that you are healthy?
Was the issue with your ear particularly painful or life threatening?
My last experience w/private US health insurance:
- employer paid $10K a year
- spouse paid about $300 a month
- still had a deductible, then 80/20 up to max OOP
- just the employer portion + employee portion for 3 person family= $378 per person per month
Then above that the US spends almost $5000 per year per capita for publically funded healthcare which we received nothing for, but if you want to divvy it up equally that would be over $400 each per month more above the private pay plan.
Comes up to almost $795 per person per month for sweet f*ck all if you don't receive any actual medical care.
Cry harder.

I pay about 30k for my yearly checkup, plus whatever my mandatory benefits at work cost. We will never improve our system because any solutions are derided as 'American.'

Less we forget, Americas health care is the best in the world, if you want it. In the UK, we pay for bang average and can't top it up.
So would you wait 2 years if you didn't have it?
if i'm diagnosed with stomach cancer in the UK, i'm half as likely to survive 5 years as I am in the US.

the healthcare system in the US is still bullchit. I didn't have healthcare there and needed an ambulance (which ended up being a false alarm) and it cost 2,000$. they couldn't justify to me why they charged that much. It's impossible to get answers from hospitals. they just send you a bill with no explanation

Like I pointed out above you are ALREADY PAYING FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S HEALTHCARE. To the tune of near $5000 per year per capita. You are paying into that via taxes (and massive US deficit) and are getting nothing for it.
Yes, most people will qualify for Medicaid, a subsidized plan on the ACA marketplace, or employer sponsored insurance. Not everyone though.

When I lived in Thailand I developed Cellulitus and I was severely sick, not far from death I was later told, and I got on a plane back to England and had it sorted with a week for free.... which would have cost me tens of thousands in Thailand

Not sure what is "pie in the sky delusion" here.
Also I didn't explicitly say that "it" was better. There is quite a variance by country and even by location within a country.
Right now the US has the worst of both worlds. We are paying for public care (more than most other countries) and also paying for private care, which based on your own reasoning is a distorted market because of the publicly funded care. Above that the private market is distorted by regulations that allow cartels and in some areas essentially monopolies of health insurance companies.
We could go straight private (pay as you go, no money then you just suffer/die) which should lower prices as supply would be higher than demand. Insurance would/should be minimally regulated IMO with a limited number of offerings that each meet a certain minimum standard that could be offered from any location, purchased from any location, and would provide coverage anywhere in the continental US. IOW health insurance should be taken away from the states and only minimally regulated at the federal level like the banks.
Or we could go to single payer/universal healthcare, not to be confused with "government run healthcare" which implies that the government owns facilities and manages employees, etc.
In the middle perhaps would be a system that banned for profit health insurance, or required for profit health insurance to include a fat life and disability policy so that the health insurer has something to lose if you can't work or you die.
