You bros aware of this ancient Japanese way to die with honor after being shamed? Not sure why I thought of it today, but thought some of you may find it interesting.....

Seppuku (Japanese: 切腹, "cutting [the] belly"), sometimes referred to as harakiri (腹切り, "abdomen/belly cutting", a native Japanese kun reading), is a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment. It was originally reserved for samurai in their code of honor but was also practiced by other Japanese people later on[clarification needed] to restore honor for themselves or for their families. As a samurai practice, seppuku was used voluntarily by samurai to die with honor rather than fall into the hands of their enemies (and likely be tortured), as a form of capital punishment for samurai who had committed serious offenses, or performed because they had brought shame to themselves. The ceremonial disembowelment, which is usually part of a more elaborate ritual and performed in front of spectators, consists of plunging a short blade, traditionally a tantō, into the belly and drawing the blade from left to right, slicing the belly open.[1] If the cut is deep enough, it can sever the descending aorta, causing a rapid death by blood loss.

It wasn't a solo ritual tho, you had your bestman behind you who was usually the sword master and he would decaptitate you after slicing your belly. There's areally cool 60s japanese movie about that recently got a remake

I think ritual suicide implies that what happened is irredeemable, and personally, I think that's a little bit less badass than sad.

Of course, it's certainly a badass thing to do in protest, because it implies that you feel so strongly about XYZ that you'd rather die than see it. It's a very bold statement, but one that is unnecessary unless in very extreme events.

I generally don't like the idea of ritual suicide. Personally, I do see it as more of an escape than a redemption. I suppose, however, Seppuku is particularly greusome in that you do not die when you gut yourself. You instead, inflict a great amount of pain upon yourself prior to dying. Somehow that does change things somewhat, but I still feel as though it is an escape from the situation you deem shameful, instead of redemption.

I don't see the honor in willingly submitting your life to your enemy. You should force them to take it and die fighting.

A warriors death has always been the most honorable death. Devoting one's entire life to a cause has always been glorious.

The death of Benkei is probably my favorite historical death, in terms of how glorious it was.
In the end, Benkei and Yo****sune were encircled in the castle of Koromogawa no tate. As Yo****sune retired to the inner keep of the castle to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) on his own, Benkei stood guard on the bridge in front of the main gate to protect Yo****sune. It is said that the soldiers were afraid to cross the bridge to confront him, and all that did met swift death at the hands of the gigantic man, who killed in excess of 300 trained soldiers.

Realizing that close combat would mean suicide, the warriors following Minamoto no Yoritomo decided to shoot and kill Benkei with arrows instead. Long after the battle should have been over, the soldiers noticed that the arrow-riddled, wound-covered Benkei was still standing. When the soldiers dared to cross the bridge and take a closer look, the giant man fell to the ground, having died standing upright.[7] This is known as the "Standing Death of Benkei" (弁慶の立往生, Benkei no Tachi Ōjō). Benkei died at the age of 34.

I always found the "discipline" for lack of a better word to move the blade back and forth after stabbing yourself. Imagine the, pun intended here, intestinal fortitude to do that?
