It's the primary reason I've never gotten into beck.
I also hate water-y chorus sounds like the way Mike Stern uses it. Sounds like absolute chit to me, I want to hear the guitar tone not that crap.

As for chorus re: Stern, Metheny, Scofield, etc. blame the Roland JC-120 stereo amp that was really popular back then. They all got hooked and drenched their tone with that chorus sound. I saw Stern live with Dave Weckl who's one of the best drummers I've seen up close so I mainly focused on his playing and after a couple of songs blocked out Stern's chorus sound.

I give up on drum programming though, you can make fun of that all you want lolYou're barking up the wrong tree mang. I've been trying to get miscers to post more videos for years.
Trying to get Dom to post a video is like trying to squeeze Nut Sauce from a rock.
Swim to the Hammett post videos occasionally but he refuses to allow you to enjoy the music because of his drum programming.
No one likes to post videos except me it seems.

No! I need your drum programming for the comic relief it provides for your serious songs.
And you're talking about that cat Betathanyou or something like that, he used to be in a band with Anton Oparin so that should say it all.
You gotta remember this Domination solo I posted a long time because you clowned me for the open G string I kept on accidentally hitting and ringing out. Which was correct criticism to be honest lol.
But hear the glimpses of my top tier vibrato and bending mang.... except for that last bend lol.

+ Took lessons with Satriani. I think Hammett was his last student before he quit teaching. Joe's bending and vibrato is top tier so there's no excuse really.

But after a while, I was taking two lessons a week from him. I became so thirsty for what he had to offer me, I was just, like, 'Bring it on! It's all making sense. I wanna learn more.'"

That's the extent of my theoretical knowledge at the moment. If I posted something that sounded jazz/fusion-y I was probably faking it but thanks.
I've been playing easily over ten years but my theory is sh*te. I can read music notation and I understand the fundamental concepts of theory however I have very little of it memorized/internalized. I don't even have the Circle of Fifths memorized.
Z4v4 and Dom seem to be the theory heads around here.

Anyway, figured I'd post some of my poverty noob playing since we were talking about posting vids. I haven't played for the past couple weeks because I've just been lazy af, but these are all from the last ~2 months. I'm open to any critique, especially on my alternate picking vid. I've been working on building it up so I can eventually do some trem picking. That and bends are the big problems I see with my own playing. I still bend with one finger whereas all the good players i see tend to bend with three. I started trying to shift to three but it's quite an adjustment. Anyway, like I said, all pointers welcome.
Spoiler!

Also some of the notes are a bit robotic. EoR was saying a previous post that you need to play each note like you mean it and give it life.
Of course this is extreme criticism because you are a good player but if you improve on those you will be great.
I also liked the jazz video. Really nice.

The two that come to mind are Junkhead's opening chords--they switch from open to pretty heavily palm muted--and the palm muted alternate picking section of 'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath. While playing those I've started to switch from open to muted and I think I know what you mean about the texture changing. I will start using it in my warm up routine and alt. picking stuff just so I can get a better feel for it/more control.Ah right, what I meant by "faking it" is that if you were to put a jazz lead sheet in front of me or ask me to improvise over jazzy chord progressions I would fall flat on my face. I can kind of do that faux-jazzy improvisational thing like in the video but any legit jazz/fusion player would recognize that I was doing some real basic chit.
I think your alternate picking sounds clean controlled, at least at that speed. Movement seems primarily from the wrist and not a ton of wasted motion, nor does it look awkward. I don't think you really need to wait before trying to tremolo pick on one string, you should dive right in.
There's a ton of info out there on picking faster, if I were to add my two cents it would be to evaluate how far the tip of your pick dips below the plane of the string when picking through it. I try to have as little amount of the pick as possible dip below the string when playing fast to reduce drag.
Also, you might want to vary the dynamics - do those alternate picking exercises with varying degrees of right hand palm muting for different sonic textures.

And re: trem picking, thanks. I always felt it would be good to have alt. picking dialed before diving in but I think I'll take your advice in this case. Thanks for the input!

I usually have pretty solid bending and vibrato accuracy.
Yeah I agree, I don't think that solo was very good and did sound pretty robotic that's why I titled it Sh*tty Domination solo lol, but I also have an issue with "red light fever". As soon as I hit the record button I instantly tighten up and get less relaxed.
I feel like I gave a bunch of excuses there but I'm gonna stand by them.

Hmmm, iconic. That's a strong word. What solos by Hammett would you actually call iconic other than, I guess, the solo from One and Fade to Black?

Iconic is the perfect word, like 90% of guitarists learn one of those solos at some point..Everyone loses their chit when he plays it live..

The funny thing about that Fade to Black solo is like 90% of those guitarists who learn it always f*ck up that one fast part, y'know that part I'm talking about.

Listen to Joe's playing here and imagine some of that on Metallica's softer stuff. Kirk seemed content to wah it up rehashing the same pentatonic licks. Surely when Hetfield drops the best solo on the band's most successful album he'd realize he was going backwards and it was time to hit up his old teacher. Former students Steve Vai, Alex Skolnick, and Charlie Hunter obviously all continued to improve.
2:50 No shaky bends or meth-infused vibrato here. Still the gold standard for me.
