I drive an old car. All I do is pay 50 a month for gas and occasional oil change. Dunno how people justify spending hundreds a month on cars unless it’s a truck that they use for work.

first of all, buying a brand new car is an incredibly stupid financial decision given the rapid depreciation. i buy slightly used ~3 years old. the loan interest rate with my perfect credit score is about 4%. my muni bond fund currently pays about 3% tax free yield. cash pays a yield of about 0.60% taxable. stocks (the S&P 500) over a 10-20 year holding period historically returns an average of about 10% annually but there's no guarantee and you will prob have a lot of volatility over that time (a typical car loan is what, 5 years? - so in that comparable short time horizon you could be underwater on that investment).

I bought an 05 prius as a winter beater car. The o2 sensor has some weird sheild that is making changing it a pain. I took out the battery and tested each cell and most are 2500-3500mah (pretty crappy considering they were 6500mah new). Some even 1000mah. But car works ok, still get 50-60mpg.

Yea I just bought a Honda Accord for $2500 cash. From my dad's/buddy's used car place. Was going to sell it for $4500 but offered me wholesale price.

Two months left on my lease. Paid off though. No debt crew.

This man gets it. Debt is slavery. I don't like debt. And it makes me think twice about pissing away money on a depreciating asset like a car when I have to write that big check. You really ask yourself - Do I really NEED a new car? The last car I bought was 17 years ago - a brand new 2004 Lexus - that I paid cash for. Yes I bought it new but it wasn't so bad because I kept it for 17 years. My next car which I'm buying soon will probably be a 2017-2018 used Lexus - not a new 2021. Why? Because there will be a $20,000+ 100% price difference. I can justify paying 100% more ($20,000) for a new car vs. a slightly used one. When you're debt free you alway want to stay debt free. When you have a bunch of debt and payments you get stuck in that mindset and it becomes your debt lifestyle. I don't want a debt lifestyle - I want a cash lifestyle. I bet I'm driving one of the oldest cars on this forum.
