Got another bear.

This was the one with the hurt leg I have been hearing about for a while. Not sure what's wrong with it yet, but may find out when I butcher it on the weekend. Hurt leg didn't slow it down much, but still couldn't have been pleasant.

Nothing broken anyway.

Field dressing a bear requires an opening cut. I took it a bit higher. because it was so warm here I had to pack it with ice to get it to cool. with big game rapid cooling is key, otherwise things go bad fast. Since it was warm I opened it up a bit more to enhance cooling. It got cold now though.

Bear is one of the better tasting meats. A bit fatty, yes, but the flavor is actually sweet. I think that is partially due to the blueberries they eat here but I have no proof.

used for ground and stew meat mostly.

I got a smaller one. Once you cut the fat cap off...the meat is nice and marbled. I marinated mine and cooked it over a fire in small strips and it was like Prime Rib. Srs. I wouldn't eat a dump bear tho...mine was a woods bear.

Yup. No dumps here. This one was going through town every soo often, but just knocking over bird feeders and such.
The last one I had I got a solid 5 gallons of fat off it. Giving it to friends who render it into lard. They got no bear this year and want it for baking. Makes a mean pie crust.

Id say 95% wild. Good enough for me.

Yea, i helped a friend skin a huge dump bear, he said he pulled a diaper out of its stomach...the fkn meat smelled sort of like garbage too. He wasn't gonna eat it because of that. Had a nuisance tag in its ear so it was always in dumpsters, and he got it about a mile from a landfill. Fuk that noise.

I trap them for private individuals when they are causing property damage or threatening people. I dont always use lethal methods, as some times a bear just needs to become scare of people in which case I negatively associate people to them and put fear back into them. A rubber bullet causes a bad welt and bruise and has no lasting effects, so thats the first choice. I am also able to trap them on public land for food/ fur market.

This one was for the freezer, and fur, although I probably wouldnt have taken it if it didnt have a bum back leg. just kind of worked out.

Man, I'd love to try some bear. I'm going to cook some squirrels in a couple weeks after we get a few more, it'll be the first time I've had squirrel since I was a kid. We eat alot of white tail deer, though.
Dude I work with says his brother will eat turtle, racoon and all kinds of crap. He says racoon is actually good, I think the part he was talking about would be the equivalent of back strap on a deer.

i wanted to try turtle, but they just made them protected here. Oh well.

There is actually a pretty big ****** meat market in a lot of southern states. I think i am good tho. lol.

sucks when people harm animals needlessly. i guess if it was really struggling, you put it out of its misery. I always heard that black bears generally avoid humans so it makes sense that you can scare them off with rubber bullets. I wonder if that fear lasts a lifetime or if they slowly get over it and return.

LOL, I didn't know about the southern states meat market, I'm in VA but maybe it's not south enough for that. VA is changing for the worse in alot of ways.
And no thanks on the moose, I hear they are plain mean. My old boss was horseback riding in WA state years ago and a moose chased him and the horse down a mountain path, he said he just hung on for dear life, lol.
Plus they're so darn big I guess you have to carry the meat out in several trips?

Ya, the cruelest thing I have heard is people say that the best way to get rid of a nuisance bear is to shot them in the guts. That way they run away and die of septic shock somewhere else.

Doesnt sit well with me. Everything feels pain, and nature is cruel enough. My goal is to be as humane as possible.

Dont get me wrong, rubber bullets hurt like hell, but its a learning experience not a final one.

the problem is when bears figure out people=food. Pavlov style conditioning.

A blast with a rubber bullet associates people with pain, so they dont bother people anymore. they do generally avoid people, but every so often one gets past a point and has to go. No issues with me, I am happy to turn it into muscle building food lol

But on the topic of associating people with food, I saw a program about some town in the arctic circle (I think it was Canada or maybe Alaska somewhere) where polar bears were encroaching on the garbage dump outside some remote settlement and they had to figure out a way to get them away since polar bears are huge and more aggressive. I think they ended up tranquilizing it or something.

As for harming animals, it's just psychopathic. I've heard of people even shooting neighborhood cats and dogs with pellet guns because they want to keep them off their lawns. Fukking *******s.

I have skinned enough of them...they have an impossibly massive, hairless, gross looking bunghole.

The feral cat issue is a big one, with feral cats killing upwards of a two billion song birds a year annually in the USA. But killing fluffy because its "on your property" is pretty sad and is a fast way to get yourself on the 6:00 news.

I don't get too bent out of shape over what others do. I have my own ethics I follow, and thats good enough for me.

And the vast majority of pellet guns should not be used for anything other than target shooting.

Edit: and as for the polar bears, thats way different. We planned a canoe trip to a northern river once, and the rules were one shotgun per two people, and start shooting when you see a bear, unless its walking away. Theory was if it ran toward you, you wouldn't have enough time to get enough shots in to kill it because they move so fast and are so big so you had to start shooting early.
