and FrankGrimes is right re:divisiveness. imo the focus on race and gender inequality is to keep attention away from economic inequality. e.g. if special quotas were used to provide college entrance based on family income instead of race or sex it would make more sense. if someone comes from a poor family/impoverished schools then it seems fair to say they haven't had equal access to educational resources and should be judged against other applicants with a similar background, not against someone who had access to top schools and extracurricular activities.
