History brahs: How did the allied forces take the beaches at Normandy?

Seems like it was an overwhelmingly impossible task... yet all the allied forces combined only lost ~4,400 men.


How?


You’d think with them coming on shore in those crappy carrier boats moving uphill to a fortified defensive line of machine guns, they would have been mowed down with an 85%+ rate of casualties....

Only one beach was really defended well (omaha). Utah sword and juno beaches were relatively easy affairs. Those casualties were nearly all at omaha.

The Germans weren't expecting landings at that time or place. The coast further to the north-east was far better defended.

apparently it was evenly split. about half at omaha and just over half at the rest. idk how accurately that is though (history.com google source)

I believe they even went as far as leaking tips that they were planning the invasion at an alternate location. That got back to the Germans who diverted their attention and resources.

they went in knowing the germans expected them elsewhere

There was a huge misinformation campaign. Germans thought Patton would be invading from a different spot. They used fake, inflatable tanks to make it look like a huge troop buildup in the wrong spot. Also it helped that Britain had compromised and turned Germany's entire spy network so they could feed them false info.

The counterintelligence techniques were so good that some of them remained classified up until the 90's. The Germans really had no idea the allies were attacking Normandy until it happened.

Even after it happened, Rommel was off at a wedding or something. Only Hitler was allowed to direct troops. He was asleep when the invasion took place and his generals were too afraid to wake him up (srs), so no troops got moved. If the Germans had counterattacked they might have been able to push the allies back into the sea.

For the Germans the whole thing was a giant comedy of errors. Hitler was an incompetent commander and he was a micromanager.

There was a massive disinformation operation, including staging fake tanks and planes across from the pas del calais, weather was not good prior to invasion lulling the germans into a false sense of security, and it was truly on such a massive scale that they would have had to seriously blundered to not have gained a foothold. They were called higgins boats, most of the modified tanks and armor sank and didnt come in until later or thru the mullberyy harbors (you can still see them in arromanches at low tide)
They bombed and shelled the coastal implements from battleships, as well as dropping ariborne troops behind the lines. I toured Normandy with my son, there is still 25ft deep craters at pint du hoc from the battleship bombardment that you can walk thru, some emplacements took direct hits such as azeville battery (about 5 miles from omaha beach) where they still have the shell that penetrated the bunker.

The atlantic wall fortifications are impresssive and there is alot of it left, some restored that you can tour, some just sitting in a field with cows grazing, some graffitied and made into some sort of modern art thing in Dunkirk. All along the normandy coast there is museums, personal collections of artifacts in peoples yards, etc. I would recommend a visit. I took the train from Paris and rented a car in Caen, lots to see and beautiful countryside, mont st micheal is not far either.

The entire normandy campaign cost around 10,000 lives, most buried at the cemetery right near omaha beach.

Ive never heard that figure no. Most of the time when you see figures for battles or campaigns its casualties, which means wounded too. I'm not sure how many Germans or civilians perished, the Normandy campaign included alot more than just the landings.

Side note, little known cool Korean movie that has something to do with D-day "My Way" based on a true story, also interesting many troops on Atlantic wall weren't even german, and certainly were not crack troops.

Oh i see you were responding to op, my bad. Just under 10,000 on allied side total campaign, so 4400 on "the longest day" is probably correct or close to it.

Total air supremacy gave air cover. MASSIVE naval bombardment of fortifications suppressed the Germans ability to fight/defend effectively (artillery is the King of Battle for a reason). 4 out of 5 beaches weren't well defended, mainly do to resources being taken away to fight the German Eastern Front.

Thanks to probably the largest misdirection effort in world history - look up Juan Pujol Garcia and Operations Bodyguard and Fortitude - the Germans were led to believe that Normandy was just a misdirection and the real landing would take place near Calais or elsewhere. Plus the Eastern Front tied down most/the best of the German forces as many of them had to be redirected.


The weather and the currents fuked with the Allies, plus at Omaha the Germans were firing at them from a cliff, so they had major difficulties reaching/clearing the beach.
