Is it even possible to be 1% bodyfat?

Was watching a documentary on Lou Ferrigno and he says I’m in the best shape of my life at 295lbs and 1% bodyfat. How low of bodyfat can you be before death?

People from back in the day get a pass for saying something so retarded. Stage-ready bodybuilders get to something like 4% or 5% at the lowest and that's with superphysiological levels of muscle bumping the denominator way, way up.

No. My heart almost stopped when I was roughly 5% when I had to be hospitalized for anorexia. The lowest possible is between 4 and 5%, & even if you stay there too long, you risk death. I’m talking a real 5%, not measured with calipers. I’m sure he was 1% with calipers or some other bullchit metric.

Ya I thought I read something like that before too, that’s why that claim seemed off.

The lowest I believe recorded has been mid 3.5% . Cant remember where I saw it. Honestly below that you will likely need to be on life support or you would just die.

The problem is that there are limits to our ability to accurately measure since Dexa, Calipers and everything else as measurement tools cant measure your true fat%. THe ONLY way to get a 100% accurate measurement of fat is to physically cut the fat off your skin and organs and weigh it, which is only possible on cadavers obviouslly.

I guess its time to start training again.

How many percent roughly do you think those calipers could be off on average?

They’re almost completely useless unless you’re tracking changes within an individual. Even then, factors like hydration and water retention can easily fuk it up. Case in point, they have a nearly 11% margin of error in men:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20040894/
