Why do anime characters look white?

Yet they're drawn by asians?

Fashion illustrator Nagasawa Setsu expressed the feelings of many Japanese in an essay he wrote in 1983 for the Japanese playbill of the British film Dont Look Now: With their sharp-featured faces and long-limbed bodies, Westerners (read Caucasians) are physically suited to the movie screen; everyone looks almost too beautiful, down to the minor characters . .Japanese are just the opposite. Even people who appear delicately beautiful in person look round and dumpy and totally unstylish on camera.

Is it a (sub)conscious desire of them to be white?

Op is right.

He maybe be venting cause a white girl called an Asian miscer "safe" and then he proceeded to smash said white girl.

But op is right nonetheless.

This trend of them idealizing white people isn't new .

And who could blame them , white people are the best looking one's in the world on average.

Totes a Scandinavian, nothing Asian here.

They have big eyes because Osamu Tezuka, the "father of anime" was inspired by Walt Disneys characters with big eyes.

Nah brah, I genuinely like asians. Just can't stand the extreme coping and lying they do. But to be honest maybe I'd do the same if I was asian.

Anyway I only care about the truth however brutal it may be.

This also explains a lot:

Asia's ideal beauty: Looking Caucasian

https://edition.cnn.com/2013/06/25/h...uty/index.html

Many koreans getting eye surgery to have bigger/caucasian eyes.

"Asians generally have wider and flatter noses. Asian rhinoplasty narrows the nose and makes it project more, similar to a European look. Asian blepharoplasty creates an extra fold in the upper eyelid. While present in nearly all Caucasians, this extra fold occurs naturally in only 15% of East Asians. "

Wrecked. Lmao.

Still agree with OP that most anime characters look caucasian and it's a well known fact that looking "white" is a beauty ideal all over the world (skinny noses, blue and green eyes, straight hair, blonde hair, whitening cream, eye surgery). The list goes on. No point in arguing this.

And you go on to link pics of characters that were mostly created decades after Walt kicked the curb. Way to go, breh.

Tezuka himself said that he was inspired by the early works - 1940s - of Disney, notably Bambi and the Uncle Scrooge comics. Just because the characters dont have squinty eyes or whatnot does not make them Caucasian.

Abosolute cope.

There are many animated movies by Walt Disney about actual humans in the 40's and 50's produced by the man himself. For example; 1937's Snow white, Cinderlla, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland,....

Ok, guess you should go and resurrect the guy to tell him he was wrong. Possibly lying.

As a child growing up in the 1930s and 1940s, Osamu Tezuka adored Walt Disney. He is said to have watched the 1942 Disney film “Bambi” more than 80 times. He also enjoyed “Dumbo” and the post-WWII “Uncle Scrooge” comics drawn by Disney animator, Carl Bark.

Under the influence of the animated, full-length Disney feature films of his youth, Tezuka became the first anime artist to tell stories in a manner that was cinematic in scope. Where other artists had been simplistic and guileless in their storytelling, Tezuka was intensely active and highly emotional in his. Tezuka wasn’t afraid to use several pages to explore a scene in detail.

Anyone who compared the work of anime artist Osamu Tezuka and the work that came out of Walt Disney studios in the 1930s and 1940s could see the obvious similarities between Disney’s characters and Tezuka’s. Of course, Tezuka created all of his own characters and story lines, but he borrowed the bold lines, round heads and large, expressive eyes of Disney characters, making his own characters at once impossibly cute and extremely expressive.

Borrowing Disney’s simplified animation style served two purposes for Tezuka: It helped him cut animation costs, which was crucial in an industry that was already struggling, and it also ensured that his mangas and anime films sacrificed none of their emotional intensity. The large eyes, though cartoonish, allowed Tezuka’s characters to express any emotion called for by the scene.

The generations of Japanese animators who followed Tezuka borrowed his animation techniques and also gave their characters big heads and oversized eyes. Over time, this technique became characteristic of the “manga-style” so recognizable to anyone who likes to watch anime. It’s the reason that even relatively violent anime films like “Princess Mononoke” feature cute-looking characters with big, adorable eyes.

And this proves me right?

I quote: "Of course, Tezuka created all of his own characters and story lines, but he borrowed the bold lines, round heads and large, expressive eyes of Disney characters"

All Disney characters influenced him, not just the animals. Just look at Pinnochio for example, the humans and animals had all big eyes.

For starters he was rebutting the statement you made saying Disney characters were all white. He shut that argument down easily lmao... you were obviously wrong but instead of admitting that, you moved it to "Lol so Disney only drew animals?" Damn....

Either way, there's really no proof he can show you to convince you otherwise, your mind is made up. As he said, Tezuka was inspired by old Disney work - especially the eyes. I remember reading awhile back that he believed bigger eyes also made them more expressive. However to you it HAS to be because they love white people, anything else is pure cope.

edit: just saw the expressive part was already mentioned in quote above.

That would make your argument less valid. If he was inspired by all Disney characters of the time, including animals, it most likely means he didn't create them because he wanted them to be more white. The common factor is mentioned in BraneyGumble's quote.

No it was clear he was coping with "only Disney animals influenced japanese animators" When the humans, which were almost all white, also had the same big eyes and experssions, etc.

Anyway, it's clear anime characters look white and not asian. I understand you need to cope though.

People in the western world tend to be extremely ignorant about this, but most places in the world are still far more racist on the whole than western countries in their current state. Eastern Asian society can be extremely racist. For example, say two 9/10 Eastern Asian HHB's came to the US, one Chinese, and one Japanese. 75%+ of Americans would have no idea which one came from which country, and they would be viewed on a common level of attractiveness in the US. But back in China and Japan, people would absolutely know the differences based purely on looks and would tend to favor the one from their own country.

Light skin is considered more attractive in those countries. Hence why darker skinned Asians are considered lower on the social heirarachy than lighter skinned ones. Plus Japanese society became somewhat obsessed with American culture post WW2 due to American military occupatuon for years there, and it carries on to this day to an extent.

So all that said, it's no surpruse that they focus on glamorizing lighter skin and features that are closer to western ones than blatantly Asian features in their anime cartoons. Still though, you can tell features of characters on those shows that seem kinda Asian unless depicting a specifically white character. Part of it probably also has to do with wanting to appeal to western audieances as well as Asian ones so they can make a lot more money.
