Can anyone explain why we continue to use cemeteries in 2020?

How are cemeteries still a 'thing' for such a highly developed country in this day and age?

They take up too much space.

They're bad for the environment.

Someone is just getting filthy rich off the death of your loved ones.

Combination of religion and many people still being unable to cope with the idea of death.

Agreed

They should wrap you up and plant your body with a tree

It would make a nice park and each tree could be kind of like a tombstone

This is actually a great idea. Seeing something beautiful come of your death seems like a much better option than rotting away under a mound of dirt and having your family members come and cry in front of a tombstone

Cheeky. But it's actually funny that you say that....

The reason this came up is because the other day I was telling my girlfriend about how the cops were digging through a landfill here in South Florida looking for a missing girl and somehow one thing led to another.

In the netherlands you have to pay a subscription to bury someone. 15 years at first. then you have to renew it.
Once you stop payment, they dig your body out and replace it with someone new. Very fukked up.

I agree OP, we should be recycling the organic tissue of our deceased relatives into fertilizer and clothing for the poor.
