Which one should I move to?

I have been to Chicago but never NYC. How do they compare?

NYC gives you more options but it’s very expensive.

Chicago is actually a relatively affordable major city, but is much chittier and crime is higher.

I'm in Dallas area but I am sick of driving so want to move somewhere you just walk everywhere and take trains.

What is social life like in each area? Which city is it easier to make friends?

NY is way better. Just live a 1h train ride away instead wasting your money to live right next to a gay bar.

Fellow Dallas brah moving to NYC once COVID stuff is over. Got a new job there WFH until then.

If you go before March you can get a good deal on an apt lots of inventory right now expected through winter IMO. Deep discounts boyo

Chicago sucks now that everything is locked down. The only thing it has going for it is a great social scene and that's gone...let alone being in the worst geographic area in the US. Nothing to do here right now, no hiking, no geography, no worthwhile close road trips (12 hours to get to any sort of mountains). But when Chicago is in its stride and not locked down it's a ton of fun. Even commuting on the L everyday is something i miss before Covid.

When the idiot mayor doesn't lock down the beaches also it's a great time. Getting yucky on the beach in perfect summer weather is amazing. I kayak a lot too and Chicago is amazing for that

NYC is clearly the superior city when everything is normal.

However, Chicago is a much better city for average dudes. You can be an average ass guy and still get a lot of pussy and have crazy blowout weekends in Chicago on a salary of like $75k-100k. And honestly, if you're willing to live with roommates it can be done for a lot less. I've walked around at 3AM before in Chicago and wasn't worried at all. There's obviously crime, but it's not something the average person needs to worry about regularly.

There are some big negatives to Chicago(at least what I think are negatives). The girls there are aggressively looking for dudes to lock down, and although you can basically smash at will it becomes kind of a turnoff pretty quickly for every girl to be playing games and always trying to steer things toward a relationship immediately. And if you do marry one, they are midwest girls so you're basically stuck in this chitty cold city around her family.

One other thing to consider about NYC is the GOAT tier location. You said you’re tired of driving. Well in New York if you need a weekend getaway, you can hop on a train and be virtually anywhere in the Northeastern U.S. within a few hours. Want to hang out in the Hampton’s? Take the LIRR. Feel like catching a Red Sox game? Take the Amtrak to Boston. Weekend getaways to Philly and D.C. are just as easy, even Upstate New York.

If you live in Chicago where are you gonna go? Milwaukee? Gary, Indiana? That comparatively isolated Midwest location is not very good, so you better absolutely love hanging out inside Chicago proper all year long if you choose there.

Can always fly out of Chicago. That's cool though, didn't know you could take a train from NYC to other cities so easily. I always assumed everyone just flew if they need to go to another city.

Heart wants Chicago but looks like job will take me to NYC, but nothing concrete- far from a decision.

One great thing about Chicago is if you live on the L you can get to either airport directly. It's been fukking awesome packing a bag and hopping on the blue line to O'hare for weekend trips before Covid. So fukkin easy. Let alone you can go anywhere in the world from O'hare

ITT: We have people acting like every part of NYC is as expensive as downtown Manhattan or every part of Chicago is as crime-ridden as the south side.

Lived/visited both cities. Assuming no lockdowns or shutdowns/pre covid.

Really comes down to salary--a high paying job? NYC and not even close srs. Despite what misc brahs say about NYC it's the goat for a single young professional brah.
-amazing nightlife, amazing food, Michelin stars restaurants, top tier super models from across the world, tourists, museums, sports. NYC is untouchable for a single brah. also if you not a fan of manhattan head down to brookyln or CT or Hamptons or Boston etc.

Chicago: Great if you not a high salary its like NYC lite version. NYC is the big leagues. Chicago is the 2nd division. Chicago is still a very fine option. Cleaner, more affordable, lakefront, beaches.

Money not an issue? NYC all day. If money is then back to the drawing board and see how it budgets out.

90k in New York you are lower middle class (NYC for the scrubs who will try to argue this)

90k in Chicago you are doing fairly well and can have some fun. For one housing is far, far cheaper

Agree with most of what’s said above, NYC def has more options but Chicago is an awesome city, or at least it was pre covid and riots. Will see how it recovers. The summer in Chicago cannot be beat, it’s arguably the best city in the whole US during summer. Downtown and adjacent areas are cleaner, more affordable, and have tons going on. Also, I’m from the Midwest so I am biased. You can easily afford to live in river north or streeterville with 90K salary, arguably the best areas in the city.

COL in NYC is a lot. Too many baller brahs to compete with srs. In Chicago, it's more affordable. Given that salary that's solid, you can have a lot of fun with that. Chicago is a very fine option.
