Academia is the biggest scam in modern history - change my mind

BRB feds extending heaps of money to kids with no assets to ultimately get a useless degree, straddling them with debt for a decade at minimum.

BRB amortization.

BRB professors making well into the 6 figures to sit on zoom and not give a ****.

BRB cultural indoctrination

You're not wrong...

Most professors couldn't care less about teaching. They research esoteric topics and produce papers which roughly 5 people read on average, then regurgitate the same slide deck for a decade when forced into the classroom

Unless you go into something that you really need a degree for it is completely useless.

I studied engineering and got a good job after college but lol and doing liberal arts or communications.

Unironically it’s the only way to encourage 18-20 year olds to get out of the house and find a job (srs)

In an ideal world one would pay to go to college just to take classes that interest them. It should be about knowledge and learning, not paying because you know you need a piece of paper to get employed

Agreed.

For many, the indoctrination starts in middle/high school and youre sold this idea of college as a necessity by the media, govt, parents, and teachers that you MUST go to college to be successful. The school system tears away at creativity and independence and does its best to make you another cog. A high functioning piece of meat.

Talk about useless degrees or doing your "research" but it doesnt start there, when we are young we are taught this lie and if you have good luck you saw through it.

Unless you start your own business, youre a wagecel cucklord working to make someone older and richer than you more rich while youre pulled like a rubberband and tested how far you can be stretched before you can break.

it's dumb that it costs so much. should be government funded like the middle east.

i think europe it's free too some places. germany... norway...sweden

makes no sense why it costs so much. if u want a country to continue to advance wouldn't you want the average citizen to have some education whether it be technical or trade training

It should not be government funded.

Who do you think pays for it? The tooth fairy?

Tax payers shouldn’t shoulder the burden for your dumb kids to get degrees in theater.

Feds should stop issuing huge sums of money to kids for the colleges to prey on like vampires.

Cut the money and the colleges will cut their cost.

Then you have a more affordable product, like it should be.

The government broke your legs and now you are begging they now give you crutches.

it works for other countries. they get free education in the middle east, they come here and they're doctors and dentists and engineers, they can work anywhere with their free degrees, while people here pay like $200,000 to become doctors and dentists, $100,000 in debt, places with free education no debt

I feel like the real conspiracy I've yet to hear anyone mention is convincing a forum of men that higher education is worthless, much less the homeschooling push. I do agree that some degrees are silly but even the two kind of dumb degrees I picked up along the way have landed me in interesting and lucrative roles. I know it's purely anecdotal but my friends and family all have reliably employable degrees with the lifestyles and security to go along with it, and I really do worry that men are going to be left behind, and already are in some ways, if this keeps up.

The only degree I really don't understand at all is the Marriage & Family BYU type stuff. Nothing wrong with being a homemaker but what in the world? Go read Martha Stewart's Homekeeping Handbook, pin some recipes and do your thing.

This about sums it up.

Everyone encourages you to go and than you find out in your job that very little of what you learned in school is applicable to what you do.

applies to everything OTHER than actual STEM fields tho

you can't make these arguments for people who do ground-breaking research in life sciences ( vaccines etc), computer science (AI, scalable processing power)

but academics in sociology, gender studies etc, yeah sure must be boycotted

edit: realised OP is talking about more whats in it for the youngsters that go to uni

same thing goes - it is worth it to go for a good STEM degree subject - comp sci, medicine etc

agree that more people should realise that if they do not wanna study say medicine or something else, they are not therefore stupid for not having gone to college

girls especially who are silly af and cant do **** go to uni to do sociology and have sex and party

Imagine having a BA and expecting the same respect as someone with a BS.
As more and more technology and physical sciences degrees are needed, I'll bet the percentage of people getting them has gone down. I know so many people that got degrees in liberal arts/humanities and got jobs anyone with a high school degree could get. After a 5-15 years of paying loans on useless degrees they went back and got 2 yr tech degrees and make 2x what they made before.

If you're not getting a STEM, accounting, engineering, health, a few other specific degrees why are you there except to be a herded sheep that likes to party?

Focused studies are tremendously useful. Generic studies that do little to enhance your capabilities as a productive member of society are retarded and should be minimized.

You are right but mostly they are brought in to fill some leftover positions and they are top scorers in the healthcare immigration pathway into the USA; You are always better off for career progression to have gone to US medical school. But of course just lol at living in Uzbekistan so they did in fact made life better for themselves.

For science **** usually they are top tier in their fields - the head of quants in a team I used to work in a financial institution in London got his degree way back during the Soviet Union for free.

However, guy did 2 PhDs in Math and Physics in actually super competitive Moscow university programmes that recruited for research and development for singals interception for dat dere Cold War with the muricans.

This guy is incredibly smart, absolutely mogs everyone. His dream was originally to come to the USA to do work for NASA but it is what it is. Literally top of the crop cognition-wise though. srs
