Why do people inflate their salaries in idle discussion?

If it's brought up why do people feel the need to lie about how much they make when we have a magical tool called the internet and statistics can prove those anamolies. (Misc is an example more than 95% of earners on the misc are in the top 1% of earners in the country). Family memebers do this all the time also. Chit dont add up bros.

u think ppl would do that, just go on the internet and tell lies

btw, ppl who actually respond to those threads are probably satisfied with their higher salary and are more likely to disclose it

You'll look even dumber than they do if you pull out your phone and google their professions average salary mid conversation just to prove them wrong

Yeah, just lol @ every time income comes up on the Misc. Whether there's a lot of liars, or its just primarily really high earners that respond (and the rest mostly stay quiet), it never cease to amaze me.

Are you referring to sites like glassdoor that report compensation?

Those sites are very inaccurate and often times salaries stated are based on only a few reported salaries for that role.

Same reason they lie about their dick size... To feel better about themselves and/or superior to someone else. Pretty obvious.

I think the only people who know how much I make is my wife and mom. Salary does not come up in real life only on the internet. Misc has thousands of members so obviously the higher earners will respond to threads. Nobody who is an underpaid professional is going to come state their salary.

Because it’s the easiest thing to lie about to increase your worth in the eyes of others. A lot harder to lie about your appearance or athletic abilities.

I question how valid government data is regarding private sector compensation. Even if they do post averages for a specific occupation you don’t know how variable the data is that those averages are derived from.

Pretty sure they use IRS data from employer's quarterly reports for this info.

i had friends that had porsche and ferraris at 16. i would take it with a grain of salt. not only are they probably delusional for not understanding the amount of money and work it would take to get that much money (especially at 16), but they have no concept of the opposite of that.

some kid has a plush life and goes to stanford has no concept of the kid whos family struggles to pay for food and basic ammenities and thinks it's "normal"

another potential scenario where even if they aren't delusional, they are

and that's not even going into the fact that the aforementioned kids could cover stuff up. they work at a used dvd store but pretend they own a business which is how they got their ferrari. i could TOTALLY see some kids that i know coming on and fibbing about chit

So you arent from America, got it. No data is a 100% perfect but seeing as this from required reporting elements from private businesses probably as good as your gonna get. I think its good enough to dispute 99% of miscers saying they are in the top 1% of earners.

I just googled "dentist salary alberta" and the results are $79k-$220k a year. Average $153k a year

If I were a moron, I'd believe that.

Miscers are less likely to post their earnings if they don’t make a lot.

Also government data posts average earnings based on occupation. So someone working as a sales rep could mean SAAS sales or janitorial product sales. See how there could be significant variability in government reported compensation.
