How much money does it take to afford the fast life? (cars, clothes, partying, etc)

I see a lot of youtubers posting multiple videos of them in different supercars, buying expensive watches, wearing designer clothes etc. Also know a few guys IRL who post similar stuff of them living life like a rapper going out every night, blowing money at strip clubs, expensive high rise apartments. Always wondered at what income/net worth is this kind of lifestyle truly affordable?

Seems like even at $250k/yr it would be a stretch to buy a $30k watch & a nice car in your 20s without a sizeable amount of unrealized gain.

They aren't buying what you think. If a vid can generate $5,000 based on a certain amount of views then renting a sports car for $2,250 with insurance for a day and taking lots of shots and vids makes business sense. Same with lots of other things that can be rented or returned.

Conor McGregor didn't even bother taking tags off some of the expensive cloths he bought, used one time at a photo gathering then returned.

This. Even if you earn 1 to 2 million per year you can spend it all, very very easily living the 'fast' life.



Assuming someone earns 250K per year as a single guy and wants to 'ball out' you could certainly look more wealthy then 99% of the population though. As far as clothes/watches and a decent car.

Technically you could afford a nice car with a 1.5k-2k payment, but paying interest on a depreciating asset doesn't seem like the best move. If you buy an entry level rolex for like $15k that's 6% of your yearly income which seems like a lot IMO.

Definitely think you could afford nice clothes and a few expensive hobbies though. Idk maybe I'm just cheap.

I survive at my current wage rate and save for the future, if I had $200k on top of that I could do most all those things. Sure, it'd be irresponsible but it can be done. I'd say it doesn't take over $500k/year to appear rich. Top clothes/jewelry, rent the cars/house etc. Then again, real estate location is the largest factor in all of this. The house will make up the largest proportion of fixed costs in pretty much any scenario.

First off it depends where you live. Assume you don't have kids OR debt AND have savings/investments (~$100k):

Scenario 1 - Los Angeles

$500k per year minimum salary

$1.2 - 1.5mill house - $7k per month
Aston Martin Vantage - $3000 per month
Range Rover Daily - $1500 per month
Vacations - $2500 per month

Scenario 2 - Kansas City - $360k per year minimum salary

$500-700k house - $3200 per month

unless you write of the car as business expense. all those youtube car channels do.

even if you have a brand/image the car could be written off

well lots of youtubes need to live in LA to collab w/ other youtubers

also house expense can be cut down a lot by making it office for tax reasons. you would be suprised by how much crap you can write off.

The LA example at $500k is doable, but $3k per month on a car payment seems way too irresponsible. Wouldn't make sense unless net worth is well over $1M. Why is the savings/investment number so low? $100k is definitely a lot but not enough for this lifestyle.

In CA half the salary will be taxes- ie $500 goes to $250k. If you make more than a million, there's an extra bit of state income to fund retarded people or something.

$250k is $20k a month, so figure spend max a third on rent- $7k. That will get you a pimp apartment in Los Angeles for sure, even pre-wuflu. For $5k a month you can get a used 911, and presumably $8k is enough for all the other stupid consumption. Watches and male jewelry I don't get at all.

That said, the ultimate luxury is not having to work, so better to save the money and retire by 40 with a few million in liquid assets. If you save $100k a year for 17 years and put it into VTI/VOO/QQQ at let's say 7% return, you'll have $3m. That's enough to retire on.

EDIT: $7k is too much for a $1.2m house. Maybe $5k. Mortgages are incredibly cheap right now, you could probably get $4k with $250k down.
